You probably can actually get in to second if you match engine revs but that isn't a long term solution.

As it was explained to me each gear except reverse has its own synchro which is a bronze (or some softer metal) cone like item with nubs on it. Wear the nubs off and it is a goner and won't work anymore. Since you can shift into second on a roll your shift linkage is OK and the reason you can get it in is that on a roll your drive shaft at idle rotation is probably pretty close to second gear's rotation speed.

So you may have to pull the transaxle out, take it apart and replace the synchro. I have no idea how tough it is to crack open the transmission and what special tools you would need to do the synchro. But I do know you can buy new synchros.

The transmission gurus can explain this better and confirm the likelyhood of the above.

It probably is a synchro, but damn, it really is not easy.

The yellow arrows are pointing to synchros. In order to replace, one needs a press and a few other special tools, plus the synchros. For the cost of a used 944 trans ($400-$600 if you shop around), you are just better off buying one and swapping it out in a couple of hours.

I suppose that's one of those "problems" that's good to have, eh?

Sounds like you have a bad syncro, Its a big project to open the tranny and you will need a good book and special tools to do it, plus if your paying a shop to do it its big money, Your better off getting a used tranny for like $500

speaking of transmissions...anybody know about the plastic plug at the rear of the manual trans? Mine looks like it's leaking oil there and I got a new one. Does it require some sort of sealant gook?

Thanks,

I'm pretty sure it will fit as even 924's will, but you do lose the speedo.

Im not sure, My 87 924S tranny has a block off plug where the speedo would be, When I dropped in the 85.5944 tranny it had the speedo in the tranny and I just unscrewd it and put the plug in it. So Im not sure if the tranny still has the speedo gear in it put I do know that all the housings have the whole for the speedo

Oh, I was talking early pre- 85.5 924/31 transmissions, not the S. All should work as far as dirve train function, it is the speedo pickup that may be a problem. With the exception of eary ones that had a speedo cable driven off the front wheel I thought all were electronic off the transaxle.

I've got some gears from my '95 968 that I'm selling.

If you're interested in 3rd-6th gears, E-mail me and we can discuss it.

You are better off getting a late (85.5 thru 89) 944 N/A trans. Don't get a trans from a 951, the gearing will kill your car's drivability.

Watch ebay, there are always 944 N/A transaxles on there for around the $400-$600 range. Of course, there would be no guarantee on the longevity of those used ones............
