front struts

i need to change my struts and shocks, My question is. Which ones to use? The Hayse manual says the stock ones are mcphereson struts. are these rebuildable? When i looked for new ones some of the brands say you can only rebuild your struts if they are the rebuildable ones. How do you know which ones are rebuildable. Or should I say which ones can you put inserts in.

Oh buy the way. I got the new clutch in. I found a broken header pipe. loose wheel bearings. a lower radiator hose rubbing on the power steering pulley. I also repacked the cv joints and front bearings. When i bled the radiator i heard a strange sucking sound near the bleed screw. come to find out i had a intake gasket leak. when i fiked that i found the throttle body boot was cracked. I thought it ran good before, but wow plug up them intake leaks makes a difference.

seems like i read tranny fluid in the gas tank would clean the injectors. anyone else heard that? i know we used to clean carbs with um in my old hotrod days.

My answer to someones recent post is as long as we like speed, winding roads, hotrods, sports car, or whatever we will spend the money to keep um running.

I reckon ya'll can tell i'm a new 944 driver. I am an old hotrodder and kinda fell into this 89 944. paid 3000 for it 1 year ago. drove it everyday for a year before i had the time to work on it. well the clutch kinda made me work on it. but it seems to be a good ride and the gas mileage, performance and handliing make it a blast to drive.

I'll **** up now and go to bed

Thanks to all ya'll for you input in gettin running good.

Got the standard inserts for my 924 macpherson struts from AutoHauz AZ and had them posted to the uk - still worked out much cheaper for me at that time.No problems rebuiling mine.

Your 1989 944 has struts that do not have screw off tops, therefor the drop in replacements don't work (that only works on 82-86 non-turbo 944's).

However, Paragon Products (www.*****************.com) sells a Koni conversion, affectionately known as "hacksaw Koni's", that allows you to replace the strut inners with a new cartridge. It is fairly straight-forward, in a nutshell, you remove the strut assembly, compress the springs, remove the topcaps and springs, then cut the top off the strut. Drill a hole in the bottom, drop in the insert, bolt it into the strut body with the bolt supplied thru the bottom, re-install in reverse of removal. The directions come with the strut inserts, I would give this job a difficulty rating of 4 for an average home mechanic (with 1 being picking your nose, 10 being re-building a transmission).

Alternatetively, you could send your complete struts to paragon and they can echange them for you for a set already cut and prepared, of course for a higher charge, if you decide that cutting on your struts is scary.

Good luck!
