I am trying to recharge an 1984. The low side charging port is on the compressor and there is not enough room to attach the hose. I purchased an 90 degree adapter, but there is still not enough room.
What is the best way to attach the low side hose? ![]() |

Or you can install an ac/alt belt that is 1" shorter than stock length, than you can get enough room to make the hookup. Gates belt number KO 50400 for stock length callout, KO 50390 for 1" shorter. tight squeeze, but works.

Further information. I am not changing over to 134a. I am just trying to recharge with r-12 that I have. I just cannot get the hose on the low side port on top of the compressor. I am looking for an easy way to hook the recharge hose up.

You have to loosen the compressor hook it up and then tension it a little so that you don't crush the hose and you aren't slipping the belt too much.

Loosen the hold down bolts for the A/C compressor.
Loosen the bolts for the A/C belt tensioner. NOTE: If you do not loosen the tensioner and compressor mounting bolts you may break stuff! Slack off the belt tension and swing the compressor down. Connect the low side hose to the low side service fitting. SLOWLY tension the A/C belt. Watch the clearance between the compressor mount and the service fitting. Charge the system. NOTE: You may get some belt squeal during the charging operation. When the system is charged, slack off the belt tension, swing the compressor down, remove the charge hose, tension the A/C belt, and tighten the tension rod and compressor mounting bolts. Its a PITA, but this is the only way to charge an early system.
