alternator cooling duct?
Finally collected all the pieces to reinstall the alternator cooling duct on my 944... unfortunately I don't have any nuts small enough to fit the little studs on the back of the alternator... anyone know what size/pitch they are so I can pick some up before next weekend? (assuming I haven't set fire to my car out of frustration, that is...)
thanks, nate

Think they are M5X 0.80 or 0.90

Do you have any pictures of what the cooling duct looks like? I suspect mine is missing, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for.

Mine only has an elbow on the back of the alternator present. Have been tracking the car for 9 years with no problems.

If missing, I have a stock piece--complete for an 86 951. but if you have the conical piece, it is cheaper to go to an auto store and buy stock flexhose, cut to length and run that(which is what I enede up doing).

The replacement hose from the dealer is about $45 - that's just for the corrugated one, not the plastic one with the scoop or the cone with 90-degree elbow on the back of the alternator itself.

I got the flex hose from Paragon for $30-something (not sure, I ordered some sway bar parts at the same time) ther eis also the cone shaped piece on the alternator and also a plastic tube that is mounted to the body that goes forward to draw in the air. The tube is still on my car, I need to mount the flex hose and the cone shaped piece (and also mod the cone shaped piece for the big wire for my Iceshark kit) basically the only thing I'm missing is the nuts for the alternator, I might just have to drive the car to the hardware store and pull the airbox in the parking lot... whatta PITA. But I would like to make the car all correct, and also the relays for the Iceshark kit aren't mounted securely because I wanted to make sure that wherever I mounted them wouldn't interfere with the duct...

I have the cone shaped piece, but I don't appear to have any flex-hose.
Where does the flex-hose go to? Anyone have a part diagram? I think that would clarify things for me.

Since I'm taking lots of stuff out of the engine bay right now for a combo alternator rebuild/engine reseal:
The general arrangement is like this: Alternator -> Cone shaped piece -> flex hose -> rigid plastic tube that runs from the bottom of the engine compartment in a somewhat S shaped path up to the inside of the front fender next to the driver's headlight. I'm wondering how much air could possibly be drawn in that way to cool the alt. but I'll probably end up getting a new flex hose as part of this winter rebuild anyway. |
