early 944 custom intake
Hey everyone,
So today i was tinkering with my early 944 again and i looked at my airfilter box and noticed the tube that leads to the fender can be taken off. So i thought for a second that would kinda be like an intake, i havent gotten a chance to start her up n see what the difference is yet cuz im still fixing a bad dent and waiting for my rim to finish drying. My question is, has anyone done this before? any difference in performance? would it harm the engine in any way? any difference in sound? Thanks a lot everyone you've all been a huge help ![]() |

Difference in sound. No difference in performance. If you use a different filter you may damage the engine with more dirt and dust.

I believe that you wouldn't see any change in performance. The tube leads off to the fender to draw in colder air. The engineers probably optimized the length and curvatures to attain the best flow possible. There aren't any bottle necks in the tube that hinders flow, so I would say just leave it.

Cool cool I didnt think it would do anything either, im using a K&N filter so il end up putting the old tube back on. Before I do though I'll start her up n see how she sounds hehe just to play around a little bit.

Just installed a B&B...Sounds Sweet!!!
I just had to make a small dent in it, cause it was touching my 18mm anti-sway bar...

I do not know what exactly the Borla system was on my Ex, but I thought it was nice. From 4,000RPM up, the sound is much more boring compared to stock, kept my Rev's lower as is sounded great in the 3-4K range. Past that, my '85's sound just got faster and a tad louder, so if you are teh kind of guy that loves teh rush of sound as you reach the redline, what I had on that car I wouldn't recommend. Previous owners, work, no clue on what parts he used on the exaust. As I drive the speed limit, it was great.
The stock exaust is the one that gets into my blood the most on a NA. Just barks and snarls towards teh red line, sound just gets better and better, and you want to keep on. Sounds like you have the same setup as my brother's car, KN filter in airbox, and stock exaust. Neat combination if you love to push it. One day I want to track down the exaust my '85 had, and get it for my '86. It seriously kept me from realy wanting to redline the car at all, sounded good enough in the low revs, and with the low end torque the car had, it was responsive enough there to. Nicest low end of any NA I've driven(4 I think so far in life).

AEM recently came out with a new filter, its called the DRYFLOW filter, its a non-oil filter, supposedly it filters just as well as it does clean as it does dirty (vs k&n, dirty = good filtration) they have an video demo and more info on their website if anyone wants to check it out.
i think i might get a cone.. it seems promising. (somewhat)
