Hi guys,
It has been a while since I last frequented this site but I now that I am in trouble I return.. I know that's bad but please don't hold it against me :-) Recently, I have started getting a clicking noise coming from the rear end of the car (1987 Porsche 944S). Noise increases in frequency with speed, isn't always present and disappears as soon as I dip the clutch. When I am in the car on my own, it sounds like it is coming from the differential area. I have had the car up on blocks and checked the CV's, checked for any leaks etc. The clutch appears to be good and the gearbox changes perfectly every time. Does it sound like the diff? How could I test it? Any help, as per usual is much appreciated.

Probably either the clutch or CVs.... the fact that it happens when you dip the clutch makes me think that your rubber centered clutch is failing; but not necessarily, for my car seemed to do the same thing when my CVs were clicking.

I had same problem. Clicking apears at low speeds.. and at faster speed's goes away.. then at times its on and off.. but when i put it in neutral it makes no noise. I guess the extra force when then tran's in gear makes it click/grind more. I repacked them with grease the ones i thought were bad.. installed them back in and the outside cv locked up. So i just replaced it and never had any noise since

If you suspect it's in the rear differential, drain the oil and look for metal. If you haven't changed it recently, it might be a good thing to do anyway.

RE-GREASE the CV Joints. Write-ups on Clarks Garage. Its' cheap and not too hard. That's where I'd start.

![]() I only really hear the noise periodically during the summer. I will resurrect this thread if it turns up again. ![]()

When u say u checked for leaks u shouls be checking to see if the boot is dry. When I had my cvs inspected the boots were bone dry. Cleaned and regreased them and everything is fine. NOTE: CVs require a special CV grease not just any grease.
