high idle

Are our cars supposed to have a high idle on startup? Mine never did but it seems like it should being it idles at less than 1k when cold and shakes. Also if i tap on the air valve it changes the idle. If i get a new one it should high idle and smooth out when cold?

Mine did that. I put up with it for quite some time but finally purchased a new idle stabilizer valve. My old valve was stuck because the brushes had eaten the armature inside. Idle is just peachy now when cold or hot. Here's a pix of what mine looked like inside.

Wow, that makes me want to open mine up.... it's messing up all the time, I'd imagine it's f'ed probably just as bad as yours was.

Come to think of it, it idles HORRIBLY most of the time.... except when fully warmed up, at which point it idles at ~1700RPM. If I adjust the idle stop screw at all, it develops a chronic stalling problem when cold. No vacuum leaks. Good thing this thread came up, I'll check the one in my 951 when I wake it up in the spring.
