Help getting my 1983 started after sitting in storage
I have a 1983 944 that was in storage for about 2 years. I had posted before on this subject and got some good advise. The mechanic I took it to at first keep saying it was the computer as to why it would not fire up. I took it to another repair facility that specializes in European cars and they want to drain the tank of the old gas, replace the fuel pump and filter and then charge me
$1000.00 for this. I guess i will have to do this myself if I can get some advice on how hard is it to drop the tank and drain the old gas. I think it might have about 1/4 tank of gas in it and the repair shop said it smells like turpentine and that is why they wanted to drain it. Is it hard to drop one of these tanks or is there something else i can do without dropping the tank? Thanks in advance. Carl

No need to drop the tank. The fuel line goes from the bottom part of the tank to the fuel pump, just undo the line at the tank. Take off the rear passenger wheel, and you can get to everything.
Check www.clarks-garage.com for other trouble shooting proceedures...checking fuel flow, spark, etc. pretty straight forward. The fuel pump is easy to replace. The fuel filter is a little harder to get to. good luck JM

Check www.clarks-garage.com for other trouble shooting proceedures...checking fuel flow, spark, etc. pretty straight forward. The fuel pump is easy to replace. The fuel filter is a little harder to get to. Make sure the oil pump is primed. Remove the oil filter, pour oil down center hole, rotate engine counter-clockwise until the oil is sucked down the hole. Repeat until oil will no longer go down. good luck JM

undoing the line at that point will allow the old gas to drain out, but not any solid material that may have formed in the tank from storing it only 1/4 full...

after removing the fuel line remove the in tank screen by unscrewing it and flush the tank with water, to get it really clean lift the rear cargo carpet, remove the fuel sending unit and flush from there. follow with compressed air.

an hour or two labour if you get someone to do it for you I'd imagine.
