High/Low side of AC system - '87 924S

Hello Everyone,

Which is the high side and which is the low side in a 1987 924S. I know one connection is near the dryer, another is on the compressor itself, but I can figure out which one is the high side and which is the low.

Thanks,

Ed

I don't have a 924, so I have never seen it, but the low pressure hose should run from the firewall to the compressor and the hose running from the compressor to the condensor should be the high side.

If the 942S is set up like the early 944, then the low side is at the compressor and the high side is at the reciever dryer.

To get to the low side fitting you need to loosen the adjuster mounting bolts, loosen the compressor mounting bolts, slack off the belt tension, and swing the compressor down.

Connect your hose to the low side service fitting and then SLOWLY tension the drive belt. Make sure that you do not damage the service fitting.

I have the same question for a 1985 944. Is the low side by the sight glass on the receiver drier?

The "low side" runs from the evaporator outlet to the compressor.

The low side "service fitting" will always be on the low side, meaning either on the pipe from the evaporator oulet to the compressor or on the compressor manifold for the low side hose connection.

The "high side" runs from the compressor. to the condenser, to the drier and then to the expansion valve.

The high side "service fitting" will always be on the high side, which could be near the drier or on the drier to expanionsion valve pipe.... depending upon the year of the car, however it will be on the high side of the system.

That is high side. The receiver/dryer is always on the high side of the system. When operating, it should always have LIQUID refrigerant flowing through it, at rather high pressures.

Low side fitting will be on the bigger of the 2 pipes, and is either located on the driver's strut tower, or by the compressor on all model 944's.

High side fitting is either located on the driver's strut tower, or on an elbow on the inlet to the receiver/dryer.

If you charge on the high side, bad things can happen, like exploding cans of refrigerant, or compressor damage.

hmmm,

on pre 85/1 (nippondenso 6E171) the low side service valve may be on the compressor manifold port (where hose connects to compressor),

from 85/2 up through approximately 87 (nippondenso 10P15)
the low side service valve may be on the low side suction line between the evaporator outlet and the compressor inlet

and from 87 somewhere onward moved back to the compressor manifold?

comments anyone!

Over the various model years the locations of the service fittings has wandered a bit.

On the early models ('83 to 85.0) the low side fitting is at the front of the compressor and the high side fitting is down stream from the reciever dryer.

On later models the low side fitting is towards the rear of the compressor, and the high side fitting moved to the driver side shock tower. Some later models (like my '86 951 have both service fittings at the driver side shock tower, with a second low side fitting at the rear of the compressor.

Most 86's have both fittings side-by-side on the strut tower.
87+ sees the low side fitting located on the evaporator-compressor line, pre-85.5 sees it located on the compressor itself from what I understand.

Some parts-bin cars have multiple fittings.
My friend's 86 N/A had 2 high and 2 low fittings. High side fittings were on the strut tower, and on the hose between the condensor and receiver/dryer. Low side fittings were located both on the strut tower, and further down the line near the compressor. Perhaps there was some experimentation going on?...

I'm surprised mama P allowed the boys in en-gin-ear-in to go back and play with the ac system at all. I guess they ran out of things to do.
