84 to 87S engine difference. Need quick reply
Got an engine from a local Porsche parter. Same engine from an 87-924S with supposedly low mileage. Did my inspection and found it was shot. All four cylinders scored and the bearing gone etc. Not he has an engine out of an 84-944. Can't find the block model number. Says it has low mileage? I was planning to use my rebuilt head, all my new front belt bearing and other good parts off mine. I know the engine is speced as lower HP and compression. Are the the same otherwise?

The earlier engine won't have spring tensioners, don't remember if the 924S engine does or not though

Any of the 2.5 liter engines will work in the 924S. Early ones have manual tensioners, later have the spring tensioner. Important differences are the oil filler bottom hole (larger on 84 and later engines), temp gauge sender (early and 924S has a singe connection - later is a two pin sender), and cam (post 85 has a bit longer duration on the exhaust - a few more hp's).
Use all of the injectors and fuel rail, intake, exhaust, etc., from your car. Why do you need to replace your block?

Going to take another look at it tonight. There may be a single slight scratch I noticed before in one of the cylinders. Not sure if this is large enough or will make any difference. Original decision was based on the engine I was supposed to get. $1200 ca. for a low mileage complete running engine. Now if I would have put it in just changing the oil pan as it had a crack in it, it would have run fine for a short time. Probably just outside the warranty then booom. So I mic'ed it found it toast. So now it's an unknown older engine or rebuild mine. Spun the bearing so it will have to be taken completely apart and tanked. Should get it all? Then a used crank and maybe one connecting rod. Anyone got a good crank for sale. Shipping may make it to expensive to Ontario though?

Spun bearing. Might have to make the best of both engines. Your block the other crank. Here in southern California most dead 944's are crushed. A dirth of parts.

Sent you some prices on crankshafts. Looks like around 150 US dollars to buy one and shipping shouldn't be much over 50 or 75 dollars with truck freight.

hey paul.. something for you to consider..
get it shipped to a UPS depot in buffalo somewhere.. they'll hold it for you for pickup... what you do from there as far as getting it across the border is up to you  if you need help in shipping things to an address in buffalo, I may be able to help out with a little bit of notice..
