what state?

-in NJ at the state facility they look under your car with a mirror. dyno the car whole 9 yards. pretty involved inspection. its free and if you fail your good for 31 days, you can fail unlimited times.

if you go to a private facility chances are they will just put it on the dyno and test the basics, this will run ya $75 (or more), pass OR fail u still pay. and it still needs to pass smog.

i read here that a perfectly tuned 944 MIGHT pass smog without a cat. but i wouldnt bet on it.

my car actually ran and sounded better once i put the cat BACK on the car. Deeper sounding and smoother.

my explorer i take to a private inspection, because i know it will pass but i need them to overlook the smoked windows, but the 944 i took to the state.

In CA they would take your 60$ spend 30 minutes testing your car on a dyno type machine with a sniffer up the poop shoot, Then they would give you a print out that says you failed the visual inspection (that occured about 3 minutes into that) Of course you would never pass the test without a Cat Converter. Your car would be labeled a "Gross poluter" and you would not get any extension time on sticker unless you go stand in line for an hour at DMV.

Get a Cat and test pipe with flanges. Then you could bolt on and swap.

Houston is like CA apparently. It's really based on where you live. Some places are much easier than others. In Texas it's based on counties. If you live in Houston where the air pollution is bad...you stand no chance. In West Texas where there is nothing but cactus, they won't even check it....but they will take your money.

in Ontario, if you go to a private shop.. the guy wraps his lips around your tail pipe..... after about 3 minutes, if he relives childhood memories, starts to think he's a singer in an off-broadway musical, or simply fall asleep, you pass...

If he sees Jesus, you fail.

If he sees Jesus, and you give him 50 bucks, you get a conditional pass...

California you will definitely not pass without a catalytic converter. Possibly fail the visual if they look under the car too.

You would not pass in Northern Illinois either. They use mirrors to check the exhaust, the correct gas cap and the diameter of the fuel tube.

You will not pass emissions unless they don't use a sniffer and don't do a visual inspection.

If you are that concerned about it, you could PAY someone a little EXTRA... or you could just put the cat back on ;-) its not that big of a job.

Do what I do...

When it comes time for inspection, go to your local 1-man muffler shop. Ask the guy to weld in a new converter. After you pass with flying colors, go back and ask him to cut out the converter and weld in a straight pipe. Keep the converter sealed up and store it for your next emissions testing season

My 944 also passes here in Washington State. It's a race car now, so it has an aftermarket header, and three inch exhaust all the way back except for a small Dynomax muffler to keep within track noise limits.

We have no visual test, and with a proper mixture and a clean, strong spark, the emmissions are minimal.

The car is on the street only a couple times a year, but as long as it still passes, why not keep a license plate?

Hrmmm, i wonder if washington emission standards are higher than california...

I've got a chip, increased boost, and... something else... not quite sure what all has been done to my 951, need to call the previous owner... but anyways...

you can get away with mods, but no cat... thats tough right there... i suppose it could be done, Honda did it with their old CVCC, a key point to that car was, it had no catalitic converter an it was able to pass smog. BUt by all means, it was no performance car.

Cutting out the cat and swapping it back and fourth with the same pipe isnt a very good cost efficient way to go. You'd be better off buying a pipe coming from the headers back to the muffler. If it's easy for my 951, no doubt its easy for a 944.

or buying a cat, bashing out the insides, and fitting it over top your straight pipe...

I picked up a $20 mini cat off ebay and connected that to MSDS headers. It passed visual in Missouri and also emissions with no problems. It also sounds good with the headers.
