Debating whether to goto the dark side....
Well the 944 runs now and I decided to goto the local porsche dealership the other day and check out what they have. I also recently just got a very lucrative job and ....
Convince me not to get a 96 993 or 2002 carrera ![]()

For $80K, you can buy six 944 Turbo S cars.

Nope. Don't bother with a 993 or 996.
Not until after you've driven a Cayman. (Did I just say that?) I took a Cayman S around the block a little bit ago, and this block had a couple freeway onramps that made it neccessary to roll on the throttle until the sales guy in the right seat was shreiking in delight. He was giggling all the way back to the dealership, introduced me to the sales manager, and told him we just had a nice, "spirited" drive. The car has all the phenominal handling of our 944s, but has oodles and gobs of power. So easy to steer with the throttle. It's almost as fast as my modded 911, but with air conditioning, real upholstry and a radio, things that were tossed out of the 911 long ago. I'm keeping the track-prepped 944, but as soon as a few Caymans show up on the used lot and prices come down, I may have a hard time keeping my checkbook in my pocket. |

Hard call, they are sweet. But... You really should stick with the 944. Who else but you knows how to take care of it. Anyone can go out and buy a car. It takes a real man to hold on to a classic.

I guess I'll wait for quite a while, and someday pick up a non-running Cayman and put a bigger engine in it. Looks like that's just what I do..... |

You know, I heard the cayman handles amazing, but as for power, it just doesn't hold up to the 911 (on paper at least).
993 oooooo ahhhh I wouldn't go for the carrera though ![]()

Cooler,
I know you have a S2... ... but have you tried a 951? Seriously. Give it a whirl.

NO! Don't try a 951. They are evil, bad cars. They don't handle well, and they are actually slower than regular 944s. And the Turbo Lag. They take a good 20 seconds to spool up, especially when their catalytic converters have been gutted. They are hard to make go fast. Oh, and, they are made out lead. They break easily and are heavy.
In summary, you should stay away from 951s at all costs.

Given the choice, I would probably buy a 993 Carrera. I have always loved the design of that car.
If you just got a well-paying job, though, wouldn't be a good idea to do some saving for awhile? This from the guy who is paying his way toward a PhD with tons of student loans to pay off, and still decided to buy a 951. ![]()

I'm going to guess that the purchase price of your 951 was still below what a new economy car would run...

The problem is that the cost of the car is only the start.
I would make the S2 a track monster a 993 for daily duties |

Yes, the 951 cost a lot less than what a new economy car would cost. I already had my 97 Olds, however.
As for the cost of the car being just the start, so far I've only had to pay for gas and the replacement BOV that bluebullet fabricated for me ($30). Granted, it's only been about 3 months of ownership, but considering that the car won't be driven for a good portion of the winter, I think I don't have to worry about major repairs any time soon (*crosses fingers*)

What are the normal upkeep costs on a 951 vs 993?
