Broken tensioner stud.... HELP!!!!!!
86 951. Tensioner stud had broken off at the threads on the block end. Anyone have any experience getting one out!!!

Uhmmm there is a nut that should be flush with the block......
How did you bust that? It depends how much is showing. Heat is your friend....

it broke right past the nut. In other words.....I pulled the front part of the stud out with the tensioner, locking nut on front, and the back nut that is flush with the block, plus the shaft of the tensioner. It broke right at the threads on the block side.

If the engine is still in...........
You will need...... Patience, left hand drill bit, heat .......... repeat Worst case scenario you drill it out and re-thread. Not as bad as it first seems.

I had the same thing happen on a friends 951...
All I can tell you is, you need alot of patience, a drill bit, an "easy out" and a steady hand! good luck! -Nick

I'd recommend an "easy out" over a left-handed drill bit.
An "easy out" (at least the one I have) is tapered and reverse-threaded, so it will really grab the broken stud.

Can you post a picture. Not quite sure if anything is sticking out. Mine was the same when I got it. Once I took the tensioner assembly off the block, there was enough to grab with a wise grip and it came right out.

I agree with Alex. I would start with a left handed drill bit to drill a hole in the middle of the bolt. I would file it flat first (if enough of the bolt is still there and if not use a center punch that is the same size as the hole to mark the bolt center. Then drill with a left handed bit and it may grab it enough to back it out. If not, then stick the ezout in the hole and back the bolt out. Make sure you don't break the ezout...then you are in real trouble.

It is broken off just a little below the surface of the block. But....it is a clean break. Going to Sears to get a left hand drill bit.

I've never seen a left hand drill bit. Why would you need one. A hole is a hole.
The most important thing I find is to get it perfectly centred and straight. I have never had any luck with easy outs. After much flustration, i find that i end up increasing the bit size till i get to the threads then fish out the little bit of remaining metle and run a tap through it. Use lots of heat and penitrating oil. The easy out may work???

The beauty of a left hand drill bit.......... it wants to pull the bolt as it drills......that and some heat. WOrks everytime..........
And if not........ it drills it out anyways. Two possible outcomes with one procedure.....

Oh man...I feel your pain but you've definitely got it worse. I had to drill out a stripped cam sprocket bolt, and I can assure you, I was thoroughly pissed beyond belief by the time I finally got it. Lots of patience needed is an understatement... (and lots of drill bits. Those things are too soft...untill you want to drill them out
)Is there even enough room to fit a drill in there? Maybe if you took the radiator out.
