connection for oil pressure warning light?

can someone point me to where the wire connects to the sender for the oil pressure warning light? I was just giving the girlie a ride home from the Metro station and the oil light came on... I know it's still got pressure because the gauge is still working. Is it the same sender? Or different? Is the switch NO or NC? I'd like to get this fixed ASAP before I become accustomed to the big red candy like warning light being on; then I might miss a real problem.

thanks,

nate

Hey Nate-Did you check your oil? Even 1/2 quart down used to make mine come on.

if the light came on at a stop, and went off when you pressed the accelerator, that's completely normal.

It's on all the time, even while the gauge is registering 4 bar.

OK, now that it's light out I attempted to troubleshoot... it would appear that the gauge sender is a standard double VDO sender (albeit in a very inconvenient location underneath the P/S reservoir) the nut/stud connection appears to be for the gauge and the faston connection appears to be for the light. I pulled the faston and the light went out. I reconnected it and it appears to be working correctly, however, if I shut the engine off, it takes the light a few seconds to come on after the gauge needle drops to zero. I am ASSuming that this means I need a new gauge sender, yes? Can I order a standard one for a VDO 5 bar gauge, or do I need the factory correct Porsche part?

Yeah. The later cars have a oil level sender bolted to the side of the oil pan. Check your oil and the sender, if the oil is good. Mine set off the light when the oil got low. It still had good pressure, just low on oil.

It's not the level sender; at least in my car that lights a separate light on the dash. And in any case I'm maybe 1/2 pint lower than the full mark, about 1/4 of the way down from the "full" hash mark on the dipstick. (it does leak like a sieve, even with all new front seals, but I keep an eye on it. I run 5W40 Rotella synthetic for what it's worth.)
