Doesn't look turbo to me?
I only see piping going into the intake, with rubber boots and a throttle body. Unless it's SMIC or something, because it doesn't look to be FMIC.
Also, the oil filter is pointing the wrong way.....
Lots of unusual parts, early 16V prototypes?.....
Both cams are belt driven, no cam chain here. Definitely a lot of custom work there.

I think you're mistaking a rad hose for the intake... trace the runners over further to the right to the plenum.

It was definitely a turbocharged car, no doubt whatsoever about that. I'm pretty sure it was 16v as well...

The article says: "...stuffed it with the 2.6-liter turbocharged engine from the aborted Indy-car program."

Hmmm, THAT would make one hell of a grocery-getter!

The 924 CGTP and the 944 GTP were different cars--I thought.

The 944 GTP had the only 16 valve, four cylinder, turbocharged engine Porsche ever produced. I always thought the production 924/944/968 turbos always used 8-valve heads so as not to embarrass the 930.

I did not know the bit about the engine coming from the aborted Indy Car program--but it makes sense to me.

This is the V8 porsche indycar engine:

Looks like the 944GTP 16 valve 4cyl turbo engine may have used the same top end but a stroked/bored 4cyl block.

you're mixing up the " 1981 924 CGTP (944LM)" - thats what porsche calls this car as well as le mans records you can look up on the net- and the 198? 944 GTP which was based off a 944S ( or an S2?).

the 924 gtp was definitely a 16v dohc turbo. its head was unique only to that car, but it shows what could have been done in production cars.

the articles also make it clear the 2L GTR and the 2.6L GTP both made the top 10 and class wins in 1980 and 1981 respectively. a lot of websites seem to confuse the two so that it seems only the GTP wa successful.

I was under the impression that the 944 GTP was the car that ran Le Mans in 1981. I got this information from wikipedia, so take it for what you will.

There was also a race-prepped 944 that was S2-based and the factory funding in 1989 (making 300 hp), but the project was dropped before it ever hit the track--from what I understand.

Most Porsche racing histories that I have seen mention the 924 CGTP in passing, and ignore the 944 race variants.

I want to have the right information, so please correct me where I am wrong on this topic.

the S2 you speak of is what i understood to be the 944 GTP.

the '81 car is the 924 carrera gtp (944LM) as seen here:
http://www.formula2.net/1981.htm

its #7.
theres a gtr at #11 and 2 more that didnt qualify.

the 924 gtp (944LM) is a 924 variant with a one off 944 engine variant.

the only 944 racing variants asaik are the 944 'cup' cars. i think they were the first of the porsche models to have a 'cup' variant and i think the gt3 'cup' cars stem from them... if so then the 911's owe 944's for that!!

Hmm I've seen that display case before. It's the Porsche factory museum in Stuttgart, non?
