944 speedometer problem

My 85 1/2 944 with only 22,000 original miles had the speedometer just quit. It is not recording any additional accumulation in the mileage. Where do I start in checking for this problem? I'm new to the forum and don't know alot about 944's. I had one brand new in 1984 which I sold years ago. I found this low mileage car(Red with black interior/manual) around two years ago. Appreciate any help on this matter.

Kelly

The odometer gear shouldn't affect the spedo though, should it?

I assumed meant odometer because of the mention that it doesnt accumulate mileage...Does the speedometer still work or is it the odometer that quit working? If it's just the odometer then it would be the gear. If the speedometer doesnt work either then I would think it would be in the cable itself...

It could be the speedo too. I had that problem a few years ago. Unfortunately my cable was fine. The speedo cost me $250 to repair.

FYI: Unless you owed the car for it's entire life I would not use the odometer as an accurate gauge. These cars have so many problems and design flaws which "turn off" the odometer that you will never know for sure what the real mileage is. Look the car over well and buyer be ware. I'm sure your car is in real good shape. With 22,000 miles it should look pretty much brand new. But if the odometer broke on you then odds are pretty good it may have happened before with the PO.

The speed and the mileage both don't work. We plan to look it over tonight. Thanks for all the replies.

Maybe lack of power to the speedo cluster.

just thought of something... does the trip zero when you push the vent button? if not I would think it would be a power issue.

Not a power issue. I tried the trip and it went back to zero. As per the cable, I can't find it in the manual(clarks garage) to check it. Can you help me out on it? Plan to pull dash to check on speedo gear.

85.5 didn't have a cable i dont think... i think it was run off of electrical impulses from a sensor on the transmission.

My bad, didn't realize they weren't cable operated. They must have changed that in 85.5 because my 85 still has the cable...

Do I need to check the sensor and not worry about the dash gear?

I would say take a look at the sensor, especially since neither speedo or odo work.
