Front end question '84 944

Every time I hit a good bump in the road, my front wheels feel like they
bounce several times and the car briefly wanders for a second or two. Car does track nice and straight otherwise. Are the front struts gone or is it the steering
rack. How do I check it out myself.
Thanks

sounds like struts to me, I would look for leaks and do a "bounce test" although I though my shocks were fine until I upgraded to Konis. How many Km's on the car?

check for leaks at the front struts and bounce the front suspension:
lift the front end off the ground and use a pin to lock the rack in place or have
someone hold the steering wheel and check for play in all mechanical wear areas by moving each wheel left to right and observing play in;
steering shaft links, tie rods inner (mostly) and outer,
ball joints - put a bar under the wheel and try to lift it;, and for bearings grab wheel from top to bottom and try to tilt it in and out;
change all found questionable, then get an alignment
