Isn't the sensor actually located at the end of the tube just in front of the little motor and the grill on the dash is just that, a grill?

If its a sensor how come it has a motor linked to a fan?

The fan pulls air from the cabin across the sensor so that the climate controller can sample the cabin air temperature. The climate controller can then adjust the temperature according to what you have the temperature control dial set. The climate control system has three sensors, one that samples cabin temperature, one that samples outside air inlet temperature, and one that samples temperature in the air mixer.

Ahhh, the "automatic" climate control. In my opinion, I like my "manual" single slider control better.

I'm not sure what year car you have but Pelican has the air chamber sensor, reference item 35 in the Heater, A/C part diagram for 87- 91 years. I have never replaced this sensor so I am not sure how hard it would be to replace. You can sometimes find the complete Heater A/C assembly on ebay for a reasonable price and use parts from it.
