loose axle nut vs. bad bearing
so what would the sound difference between a bad bearing and a loose axle nut be? I seem to remember Hugh a while ago saying a loose axle nut would have a "wobble" sound...
this is really just a pointless question, i'm taking the wheel off tomorrow anyway to look...

My hearing is kind of shot after being in the service so I couldn't say. I see yours is an 83 so if the cotter pin is missing or gone, I would tighten the nut , put in a new pin, & drive to see if there is still noise.

If the nut is loose the bearings will not be seated so you will get a "mixed" symptom. Torque the nut then go for a drive, the bearings if shot will most likely cause a vibration at a non prescribed speed depending on how shot the bearing is and the type of bearing on it. 2 pc has races the one pc is a different animal. The other symptom is not by sound but by wobble. The wobble should be noticed driving and up in the air by tweeking the wheel...at proper torque.

If it's just a low grumbling noise it's most likely just a bearing. The one on the other axle won't be far behind it either. Those nuts are on pretty tight and have a cotter pin to lock up the nut - I'd be surprised if it's loose.

Well if you end up needing a axle stub I have a new one including the castle nut. Another thing you may have is loose lugs which will give a similiar result. I am sure you have your nuts tight but thought to mention it anyway!

my nuts are always the first thing i check.... no matter the scenario
![]() i'm on my way out.. i did the other side of the car 2 years ago and it's still holding up great, so at least i know what i'm looking at in there... thanks guys. and the sound i'm hearing is more like a "wubwubwubwubwubwub" (if that makes any sense) that is constant, at any speed, with the speed of the wheel.... sound doesn't get better or worse in hard cornering in either direction. when the other bearing went, it was akin to someone putting a playing card in the spokes of a bike.. this doesn't sound like that - it's actually softer sounding... anywho, we'll see..
