One of these things is not like the others

Here is a reminder to get your belts changed and tensioned. The timing belt broke here and a valve smashed into a piston causing all sorts of chaos. The top of the piston is missing a chunk and has a hairline fracture across it while the bottom half broke into about a million peices inside the cylinder wall. Here are a few pics. of the bottom of the piston and the biggest chunk.

ouch! How many miles was on the belt? I have about 25K on mine now and I's starting to thinking it's about time to change it.

I don't know, I got the engine from someone else with a broken belt.

I've seen several engines with broken belts but never one that bad. It usually just bends a valve. Good reminder though.

Rick, I think most here change belts around 30,000 or so and then retension after the first 2000 miles.

When I removed the oil pan there were shards or piston on the top side of the oil pick-up. I knew that was a sign this was going to be ugly. At least now I have a paper weight and an anchor....

A little JB Weld and it'll be fine.

I think 3yr/36k miles is pretty safe for a timing belt.

She'll buff out....I think....I'm going to build a race motor for a 24hr race and I'm thinking I can save some serious weight if I can find 3 more just like it....

Wow that's really ugly. The difference between a cast or forged piston is what breaks or bends first.

Ouch... That takes the cake as the worst timing belt failure I've seen!

Same here...never seen that but I have heard of it happening every now and then.
