944 short shift issue

Hey all,

Yesterday I finally found the time to install my short shift kit that I picked up from Fleabay ($70, Deutsche Parts USA). It's the same system as the Schnell and mounts on the tranny.

However, after taking everything apart, the long shaft of the SSK would not slide in the shift rod (going to the lever) on the car. It was simply too big. I sanded it down and that seemed to work. However, while working on it, I noticed that the guide pin dimple was located at a farther distance from the end of the shaft than the OE, I'd say about 1/4". So If I would even get the shaft in the rod, I would never be able to screw the guide pin bolt back in, because the dimple in the SSK shaft will not line up with the hole in the shift rod (and CMIIW, but you can only slide in the shaft so much)... The 2 shafts (SSK and OE) do have the same length though... I'm thinking the dimple on the SSK is drilled in the wrong spot and should match the OE location.

The confusing story above probably only makes sense to some of you who worked on the linkage on the trans, but has anybody experienced the same thing with this kit?

I put all the stock stuff back on and worked an hour for nothing...Oh well, at least I tightened up the bolts. The shifter seems tighter than before...

Any ideas???

I have the weltmeister kit i believe(the more expensive version) and like it alot. My dad got the schnell kit and it never felt as good, but installed fine. If I were you I would make a jig and re drill the dimple on the ssk. Sounds like they diddn't put much effort into the construction of these kits. Make sure you locktite everything because bolts backing out are not fun to deal with (trust me ;-) ).

Redrill the dimple. Ive read quiet a few posts over the last few months with fitment issues regarding the Schnell linkages. All of them mentioned the shaft being to large to fit into the main shift rod and it wouldnt surprise me if the dimples were in the wrong spot aswell.

All of these stories are one of the reasons i took my 944Racing shift linkage off my n/a before i sold it!

The first Schnell I got also had the dimple in the wrong place causing there to be no way to shift into first or second. The replacement was fine. I also installed a Speedforce shortened shifter. The result of both is amazing. It literally has a throw that makes you not have to move your arm on the console. I have had them for about 5,000 miles over a year and a half and they work great together.

The 944Racing i am referring to went out of business around 4 or 5 years ago.

I got the Schnell from Eagleday.com They were great to work with. I called them when I realized that the set pin position (dimple) was in the wrong place. Apparantly Schnell had a batch that were welded w/ the hole in the wrong place. They sent one out next day. I bought the Speedforce one from Tim @ Speedforceracing (duhh). He is a good dude. They make their own to order and it takes a week or so. You have to use a Momo knob and cut the old boot from the OE shift knob. You put it on upside down w/ a black tie wrap and then turn the boot right side up to conceal the tie wrap. It works great, looks better, and reduces the throw about 40%. If I had to do one it would be the one at the shifter. With both the throw is incredible. The only negative is that by shortening the throw the effort is greater to shift. It's way worth it, especially since my wife no longer likes to drive it. "It's hard to shift, it's bumpy, does it need a muffler?" sweeet! Good luck with whatever you do.



I just ran out to the garage and tried to get a perspectiv of how the short shifter looks




It does ride rougher than when it was new, it's also a lot lower and has bigger tires and wheels



I never did get the supercharger I paid for but it still runs great. We did a couple pulls here at the Viper guru's dyno and it did right at 145 RWHP



There is still no replacement for displacement. This has kind of taken over as my hobby car. With an LS1 Camaro exhaust, Renntech chips, etc it did 385 RWHP and 390 Ftlbs (on a dyno). It's pretty cool for a truck.

You're learning! Now to get out of doing the laundry, put her sweaters in the dryer!!

We've been married 27 years, I learned the dryer trick a long time ago. I also learned long ago to do a batch of my own cloths and mix the jeans and whites so everything is a nice uniform gray. Laundry is now off limits for me.

I thought I was the only guy that did that............I haven't washed the "family" clothes in 15 years! BTW - It will be 21 years in two weeks!!!

FYI- The same "tactics" works on doing dishes!

Agreed w/ the dishes. I clued on that and basicly picked one out of the sink, rinsed it, looked at it and proceeded to load it w/ food. Worked like a charm. I was told I am disgusting and that I should never touch the dishes again.

The same thing works for having to change the oil in the wife's minivan. Every time she asks I just say that I will need to get some more tools cause all mine are made for foreign cars. 13 years now and she still hasn't caught on.
