Engines out have a question
In the process of replacing my engine with a different one. Have it out and the new one ready to go in. Since it's out I figured I would check on the clutch. Is it possible to just take off the bellhousing to check the clutch without having to worry about re-aligning things?
I already have to remove the speed/ref sensor so figured might as well since it's only 4 bolts.

You'll have to put the clutch release lever back on the throw-out bearing, but that's all.
You'd only have to re-align the clutch assembly if you took the pressure plate off. You're using a used clutch that came with the new engine? I'd wanna check it too. According to the Porsche Workshop Manual: Check liner thickness of drive plates. I'm not actually sure what exactly the "relaxed thickness is." But it seems clear that 6.3 mm is the minimum tolerance. NB: this is for 85/1 cars - I assume late cars are similar. If it was me and it was close to the limits, I'd replace it. If you don't and it goes out anytime soon, you'll hate yourself... As long as you have a clutch alignment tool, it's easy to align the clutch assembly. Really, it's dead easy to do the clutch with the engine out of the car. Just remember to replace all the pressure plate and flywheel bolts (if you have your flywheel resurfaced). And do take a good look at the throw-out and pilot bearings.

That's why I'm wanting to check it. If it's original I'm going to replace it regardless.
Just another thing to add to the list of things to buy.
