Odometer Stopped Working

I have an 87 944 and my odometer wont work. Speedo works fine. I checked to make sure all connections are still good. I also took apart the dash gauges and the gears seemed ok. Any ideas on the cause?

Thanks
Brian

Odometer gear has slipped off the splines on the shaft or stripped. Here is a writeup on how to fix it.

I checked the worm gear and the gear that it connects to and those are intact with no issues. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem. Don't know how to fix it. Might try repalcing the motor that drives the speedo and odometer. They are like 50 bucks for a used one tho and mine only lasted 19 miles b4 it cooked the new one. Which leads me to believe that there are greater problems.

I just fixed mine. It was the infamous yellow translucent gear. Did you take a good look at that gear? It's not usually the obvious larger outer cogs that fail, but rather the smaller gear that's on the middle portion. Basically, if there are small bits of yellow crap (teeth) around the area of that gear, then it's toast.

Almost always the gear. The gear turns but the shaft doesn't turn with it. You have to look close.

Is the reset button stuck in? That would be the only other thing I could think of.

I had mine stop working over a year ago. I sent it to a speedo shop and they replaced the gear. It worked for 1.6miles, then died again.

I took it back, they tested it for 29miles, worked fine. I put it back in, and it worked for 7 miles before dying again.

I took it apart, and found that on one of the "paddle wheel" type gears that are in the trip ODO and are used to trip the next leftside number (0.1 to 1 in my case) had the larger flaps that were chipped off on the corners. This caused the trip ODO gears to jam, and the ODO to stop.

I moved that chipped gear over to the 100,000X wheel, and now everything is working fine.

Check for chipping in your trip mileage gears, it might be the problem.

Good luck,

Keith

Well got a chance to check it again today and al the gears are working properly. I was able to roll mileage both forward and backwards with no issues. Im wondering if the worm gear motor might be bad. Anyone had that problem before? Any way to check it?
