Question I have no keys

I purchased a 88 944 on Ebay, the car has arrived by transporter 2 weeks ago. Seller forgot to put keys in car. He says the keys are in the mail,9 days ago. What would be the best way to get a set of replacement keys? I don't know if the locks are still the same(ignition, doors hatch). I have read that the VIN can be used and some say the key code is on the ignition switch. I have front seals and belts on their way from Pelican, and I want to confirm that engine is good before I reseal.

Hmm... Go to Porsche with the vin and title, and they should be able to get you keys, the right ones, IDK? Or I also hear locksmiths are able to get key codes off of the locks themselves, and make a key. Talk to EBAY also.

The dealer can't do anything. The key codes aren't in their system. Best bet is to either get the keys from the PO or at least replace the ignition lock. I have one if you need one.

The rest aren't that big of a deal. Just put in a remote keyless entry system....run you about $75 installed.

You can also take the door lock tumblers out and a locksmith can rekey them for you. I think the gas lock and trunk lock can be done too, but I'm not positive.

I lost the set of keys to the car I bought from Legion. I went to the dealership with title and ID and they were able to get me a key. This was 2 years ago.

I had a key made from the dealer for an 87 944. You have to take in the VIN and Title and they will have one made. Stupid key cost like $55 though!

Kyle, do you have his keys? I still can't find mine...if I knew where my keys were I'd take you for a ride. My 944 is water tight and will go a top speed of 190. Yup, pretty much one of the fastest Porsche's ever made. But I think my brother has the keys. So I can't fire it up for you.

Sorry, couldn't resist the old forum joke in reference to this chap!

Being that its an EBAY car, bust out the cyl lock (screwdriver and hammer work fine) and start the car before spending a dime on keys....

Sorry, Trey, I don't want to be paranoid, but I wonder just a bit about a guy's first post wanting just keys for a car.

On the Miata board a year or so ago, a guy asked the same thing. He was later arrested for stealing several Miatas. One of the stolen cars belonged to a guy who posted in the thread about how to get keys. Inadvertantly helping a guy steal you car. That must suck.

How did the shipper get the car on and off the trailer to begin with if they didn't have a key. Every one i have ever dealt with have always asked for a key.

I'm with dantilla on this one.

I've been a 944 owner for 5 years. My first is a black 86, with 16' black fuchs which is on the driveway looking unhappy towards the garage. Thats where the newer 944 is. Its a gold-ish color with 17' C2 wheels. The inside has been updated with grey and graphite color leather. I have done all my own work on the 86 ,resealed, clutch, but I needed some advice on the easy way to replace a key set without removing the switch. So I asked for help, not to be called a thief. Thank you to all who offered some real advice. And I did have a miata, before I had kids.

I justed got mad enough to call the seller about the keys. He said they must have gotten lost in the mail. He said he will pay for a locksmith to replace the keys. As for getting on the transporter without keys, the wheel doesn't lock so it steers when towed or pushed. I registered the car last week so all must be well. Thanks

The steering wheel doesn't lock with the key removed???? Sounds like the ignition has been replaced, cause it should lock.

Locksmith will be able to do the doors, hopefully its the same key as the ignition.

Oh, and you can still register a car if it's reported stolen in a different state. You can always have your local state police run a check to verify, they shouldn't even charge you for it....just have paperwork handy in case it is though.

Something is fishy, If you dont have keys you cant steer because the steering locks. Dont you have to Drive the car into transporters??? How could they not have keys, Wouldnt the transporter guy ask for them too?? Im not calling anyone a thief, I just think its odd

In my experience, transport companies charge an extra 25% or so for cars that are rollers vs. cars that can be driven on.

I bought a car from an impoundment lot without keys. They were able to get it up on a hauler without any problems. The steering wheel was locked however but luckily it was in a straight enough position to roll the car in a straight line.

Anyway, the seller does seem kind of fishy that he forgot to put the keys in the car then lost them in the mail as well. I would be careful and get things checked out if I were you Trey.
