Post-Head Gasket Job: Running! But a Little Rough...
Okay, this morning before work I figured out that MY STUPIDITY caused me to put the fuse for the fuel pump sender in the slot for the "spare" fuses (why would they make slot 29 for a "spare"?).
The car now runs, and is driveable. It is, however, running with more vibration in the drivetrain than I believe it should. My first instinct says "Balance Belt". Now, when we were doing the balance belt, all we had to tension it with was the Krikit tool, which is not highly recommended for finding balance belt tension. What was reading as "correct" (ie 25lbs or so) tension felt much too tight to me. If I remember correctly, the balance belt is supposed to feel much looser than the timing belt; mine felt barely looser. But in any case, we made sure (or THOUGHT we made sure) that the notches were correctly lined up on the balance belt rollers. IIRC, the top one should have the line/notch at 1oclock, and the line on the bottom one should be lined up with the raised tab sticking out of the back of the rear belt cover at about 7oclock. As far as I know, we did this correctly. So my questions are: 1) would a too-tight balance belt cause weird vibrations through the drivetrain? 2) do I have the notches in the rollers correctly aligned? 3) what else that would have been adjusted during a head gasket job could possibly cause the vibrations through the drivetrain, if not the balance belt? I thank you in advance.

Your sock tensioned properly? I hear it should be tighter then the timing belt...

I got all excited that I already had one response, and then I click on the thread and am treated to THIS?!? ^

Balance belt should be quite loose when you adjust it. It is quite easy done wrongly as the notches are difficult to see as they are on the inside of the roller and the rear plastic trim. I would double check. The car should still idle well but you will notice a bussing (high pitch harmonic vibration) when you drive the car at higher revs. 1.5K onward. If the car is not idling perfectly try double checking the timing belt timing as well.

double check the BSB. Bring it to TDC and verify alignment of both pulleys in relation to the plastic notches.

Hmm. The two balance rollers on my car had lines drawn on them; I just used the lines to denote proper alignment. Should I be going by something else? Where are the notches on the "inside" of the roller? Do you mean at the center, near the bearing/bolt?
In any case, when I get home tonight I am going to pull off the timing belt covers, loosen up the balance belt, and see if I can tell whether or not it's correctly aligned.

It should be on the outside edge of the diameter and on the side nearest the rear cover. I would only rely on the factory markings and not any lines drawn on the parts.

Should it be on the outside diameter of BOTH pulleys? I was told by a couple sources that one of them might only have a marking on the center/inside diameter. If so, which pulley would this be?

They would both be on the outer edge. A V notch and would be on each of the 2 balance shaft belt pulleys.

steps 5 and 6 in clarks-garage.com for BSB alignment.
5) Align the upper balance shaft so that the notch on the edge of the sprocket aligns with the notch in the rear timing cover. It is located at approximately the 1 o'clock position. 6)Align the lower balance shaft so that the notch on the edge of the sprocket aligns with the raised tab which is molded into the rear timing cover. It is located at approximately the 7 o'clock position. Speedy

Ok I took the belt covers back off, and I THINK i might be a LITTLE off with the top sprocket.
Is the arrow pointing to the notch in the sprocket that should be aligned with the notch in the cover? ![]() If so, will the lower gear have an identical notch on the inside of the gear? (if that's the case, it looks like I'm WAY off)

The above pic was taken with the engine set precisely to TDC, btw.

Maybe it's the picture, but the balance shaft roller appears to be broken.

I think it's just the picture. All the rollers seemed to be in great shape.
As it turns out, the lower balance shaft roller was off by 180 degrees! I was using the wrong mark to align the roller. The car is running, and running well. It is now running the way it should, in my opinion... ... but now I have another problem with the brakes...

haha! Fooled me, someone sharpie'd it. Better monitor and sober eyes cleared it all up. Glad you got going. Now over to the brake thread.

Well the gear in the pic above wasn't the problem, it was the lower one. That one ALSO had a Sharpie line, but it was 180 degrees off from the notch for some strange reason. Hence the vibrations
