What's the normal trans noise level?

How noisy are the transaxles supposed to be? Loud, noticeable, or fairly quiet?
Anyone got video/sound of theirs?
Mine has always had alot of road whine, I thought it was normal. Now that the interior is stripped it I can also hear bearing noise when I first start it while sitting still, goes away when I start driving.
I drove my brother's '83 and it didn't sound so bad as mine, but I dont know if it's because he had alot of crap piled in the back muffling the sound.
I'm just wondering if I should start preemptive trans shopping.

Have you tried changing the transaxel fluid?

With no sound deadening, they're pretty noisy.

If your brother emptys the back of his car, and removes the heavy carpet, his will be noisy, too.

I put Mobile1 synthetic in, not much noise difference but better shifting for sure.
Guess I'll just wait and fix it if it breaks.

I take my carpet out everytime I go Autoxing so I can fit the tires in. With the carpet out it is indeed quite loud. I have changed the fluid and it didnt change the sound. Either its normal or we both we be shopping for a transaxel in the future.

I've been waiting for mine to die now for about 10 years and it just won't. The thing makes a helluva racket - whines like an F-16 - and just will not die. I sometimes wish it would because that would motivate me to use the 924 Turbo tranny I've got and put that in instead - it's silent.

Mine is VERY loud.

Then again...I have those pesky straight-cut gears...
