top of motor "clacking"

Well my faithful car that has not had a lick of trouble in 2 years decided to start making a terrible clacking noise from the valve cover area this morning.
I pulled off the road & shut it down immediately, then opened the hood & listened to it while it idled.
The oil pressure is still good & full.
Do lifters collapse?
Anybody have any experience with this happening?
help!
on the lighter side, if its cam related, i am due for the T-belt anyway

Probably lifters - what weight oil are you using? Old injectors can get very loud as well, but 'clacking' makes me think lifters. Any work done in the area previously? Was the weather really hot? Just some thoughts.

I'm using castrol 10w40 syntech.
I'm also thinking lifters, the car still runs, so it can't be piston against valve - can it?
This is nothing like the sound the injectors make, it's WAY louder.
It has been hot here, but how would affect it, other that thinning the oil.
It was about 70 deg when this occured & i had already driven about 10 miles prior.
This happened after my car was off for 20 min, then when i started again & got maybe 200 feet from the parking lot, the clacking started.
No work in that area, the car has been problem free (until today )

What, exactly is/was your pressure gauge telling you? Loss of oil pressure can be traced to a few things. The relief valve, crankshaft nose bolt torque are two common ones. When did you last change your oil?

Wouldn't be pistons against valves. That's more common when the t-belt goes south.

Just a thought - check your distributor and rotor. If the cam gear bolt backs out, the car sounds like a diesel tractor on steroids.

Check the cam bolt. Mine made the similar noises when it broke. When I took the distributor housing off, the rotor and driver came right with it. Believe it or not, it still ran fine thanks to the woodruff key. A new cam later and I'm all set.

slam - It doesn't have any oil pressure loss, last changed about 5 week ago.

Matt - a new cam? oh crap (does anybody make an auto-x cam?)

No, no, not the cam. The cam sprocket retaining bolt.

New to me, not brand new. The play that was fixing to be a disaster chewed up the key slot on the cam, not to mention the cam gear and rotor driver. I probably could have resused the parts, but for $125 I bought the whole assembly with a new reinz gasket.

I had a Porsche mechanic i know look it over & he is 90% sure it's the ORPV, he indicated it's the original one (22 years old) & Porsche has updated that part twice in the last 20+ years.
He wasn't able to replicate the noise - that figures -
But he said that when the ORPV goes, it is intermittant at first.
The part is $320, + 1 hour labor, but thats better that the labor to do valves or lifters.

Don't forget the advice you gave me about a year ago when my car was clacking. It turned out to be an exhaust leak that sounded exactly like cam clacking.

I have a compression testor is you want to use it - this would rule out loss of compression due to valve problems.
