Run but won't start

My son has a 1984 944na he bought from a friend. The kid said he ran it a few times while he had it but it won't start with the key. They pushed the car by hand and it started but now it won't start with the key. My driveway is gravel or I would try the push.

There is power to the DME relay and all the other legs check out. I put the jumper in and the fuel pump comes on but won't with the key turning the motor. I have power to the Computer and ground. There isn't any spark either. The voltage from the Air Flow Meter is low 5.5vdc. I cleaned the tracks and using the 9v battery the increase is steady as it opens. A guy told me to try an analog volt meter on the TDC and RPM sensors and I should see a tiny blip when you crank the motor, but I didn't see anything.

I did the jumper thing on the alarm connector, which turned on some strobe lights the kid had put in and under the car. And I have 12v to the coil both sides I believe, this was more than a couple of weeks ago.

Anybody have answers, suggestions.

My son bought this one and a few days later I bought a non-running 1983 944na.
Nice cars, can't wait to get them going.

Thanks in advance.

AFM 5.5V? Sounds like it may have a late model DME. Verify the AFM is correct for the DME.

Try and borrow a O-scope to verify the Speed and Ref sensors.

get the driveway paved on a decline.....

good advice on checking the parts are correct

next concentrate on getting spark and fuel

check previous posts on no start, the answers are out there, SOCAL had some excellent no start procedures.....

If you can push start it and it runs reasonably well, it is unlikely it is the DME Relay, DME, or AFM. I'd look to pulling out the aftermarket alarm crap, and jumping the factory alarm (if there is one). Second, I'd look at the ignition switch.

But, before doing anything, check to see if you have spark and fuel while you are cranking it.

If the ignition switch is bad there won't be spark, IIRC. Replacing the switch is cheap and easy, and when they go bad they'll kill the car dead.

Run won't start

Thanks Guys, I think I found the problem. The RPM speed sensor was open when I tried to Ohm it.
