MSD ignition - upgrade or not?
Anyone here run a standalone MSD (or similar) ignition box? Are there any gains? I would assume a soft-touch rev limiter is definitely nicer than the stock ignition limit (very harsh sounding the two times I have hit it). but any gains in power/smoothness/idle/ etc?
A MSD 6AL ignition box can be had for relatively cheap. It seems like an easy afternoon installation job too. I am thinking of getting a used one for my track car project.

One thing I cannot figure out with these, at least the ones with the soft touch rev limiter...
Since the ignition box is taking its signal from the points that were connected to the coil.. how do you disable the old 6400 rpm Bosch ECU controlled rev limit? If you had the MSD box set to 6800, what would stop the old DME from cutting the coil signal at 6400 first? Do you have to disable the Motronic rev limit or am I not getting something here?

Schumi, I am running a MSD Digitial SCI plus unit. Before that I was running a Omni Mag unit.
I did notice that you get better throttle response and a smoother running engine, Along with what seems to be a little better torque. Also you get to gap the plugs a little larger and can fatten up the fuel if needed. I say its a good mod to do and easy. As for the Rev limit, I think you are correct. You would need a chip to disable the rev limit of the DME, Since the DME controls the timing signal. AT least I believe that is what you would need to do Link to unit, But I got a better price than this http://www.jazzproparts.com/product_p/6350.htm

fast924S-
I really want that exact unit but it is a bit too much for me right now, unless I can get a deal on a used one.

If you go the MSD route, run a Mallory Hyfire 6A. It's completely digital and worlds ahead of the "MSD" brand name Chinese knockoff version. You don't need the rev limiter (6AL) since it's already programmed into your ECU/Chip.
I'd only suggest an MSD system if you want to run a non-stock chip that richens the mixture up and ignores the O2 Sensor feed. Also, if you're not running a catalytic converter. Otherwise, the stock CDI system works pretty good and you'll see marginal if any difference with a stock chip, A:F and exhaust.
