Any more west coast 944 Spec class build ups?
The Nationals for 944 Spec are going to be at Miller Motorsports Park for the next 2 years! This is great news for the 944 Spec class since most of the country's spec cars are out here.
Anybody else building 944's into 944 Spec cars?

Yep, I'm 944 Spec bound, hence the name
![]() As budget allows, I'm hoping to be going door-to-door before '09 seasons over. I'm in Central Cal so I can go North or South. I'll be going to Buttonwillow to get my license.

Hey Timmay,
I am obviously not in this group but would like to know what this pertains to. OK, I get that you are racing 944s that are NOT upgraded-I think. But, do you have a laymans explanation beyond that? Can you build to ANY 944 spec, S2/951 etc or are there limits? Also, is there a website or place to get info on when and where these races are? And, Spec_Bound: what are you going door to door for and why do you need to hurry up?! I would like to understand another angle to my 944 disease!

Peter,
He means racing "door to door" instead of time trialing or autocrossing. I'm telling him to hurry up so he can come racing with us. The 944 class is for 83-88 944's and 924S's. No 944S's or 944S2's or turbos allowed. The object of the class is to race Porsches, but put an end to the spending madness of racing. The cars and rules are supposed to be simple, cheap, and above all EQUAL. Every car has to weigh 2600 lbs minimum, including the driver. Please go to 944spec.org. You'll see a drivers listing and there are cars all over the country. We'll be at Buttonwillow Raceway on Nov. 8-9 with NASA.

The excluded 944 series car can compete to varying levels in 944 Cup, which also has a fair share of participants.
The idea is to go W2W Porsche racing for good money. Think anywheres from 10-20K$ Some even less. The cars can range from the most stripped vehicles meeting the minimum weight to basically taking a road car and putting a cage and harness in it. I have a car which will, hopefully, eventually make it to the midwest region.

I registered on the 944 Spec forums, still haven't gotten an update posted there yet on my progress.
The car is coming along and the engine is ready to be reassembled as soon as I make a big gasket /seal kit order and deck the head for good measure. I just recovered my dash and it will be going back in the car soon along with some data logging equipment and some electrical bits like fan controls, emergency switches, etc. My biggest problem right now is just getting time to work on it and time to get to DE's. The car is actually going to first compete in F-Prepared solo SCCA and possibly run Nationals under a slightly changed running gear (The idea is to build a triple purpose car- F Prepared Solo, NASA Spec 944, and SCCA Improved Touring.) The difference is the F-Prepared specification will not be running with the cage and bumpers, I'm fabricating a fiberglass rear bumper cover and a mesh front grille cover. 924S's look pretty sweet with no front bumper... Doc- Check your PM's from a while ago, I think I conversed with you before on this. Weather or not I get to Spec or not next season will be all up to getting comp school and a cage. I stared this project when I had some cash to throw at it, but now with some economic issues and college issues money is short. Here is a shot of what happened over the summer: ![]() The car is being retained street legal as I live within an hour and 10 minutes from Gateway and would like to be able to drive to events. I do not own a truck or trailer to do towing. Spec class events may facilitate borrowing a truck and trailer but for Solo events I would rather like to be able to drive. The wiring harness is getting re-wired right now and the transmission will be dropped and checked over next weekend. Needs new shift bushings. Eventually I am planning on a master build thread/website to log all that has been done and how it was done- it is a super-budget build, with a lot of components being fabricated and machined by myself.

Wow! Sounds cool, and ambitious! You've come to the right place to build a competitive, budget car. We have contingencies that can help ease the pain of racing, and have had a comp school every spring that is inexpensive. What is your racing/ DE background? You can take your reply offline if you like. I think it's cool your fabricating your own parts, just keep a copy of 944 Spec rules handy so that you don't inadvertently make yourself illegal! BJ Meyer has his car built for Spec & ITS as well - you might want to run some of this by him to see how he's managed it. BTW, BJ will be helping to run a BMW DE event this weekend at Gateway - stop by and say hello! Getting back to the build, a 944 Spec sponsor (Hanksville Hotrods) has a new weld-in cage available that he is discounting for us - look on the 944 Spec site for details. My first car was the prototype for this cage - it's nice! The midwest spec guys has several parts cars among us - let us know if you need something to help with the build. Good luck!

I envy you having a garage with that many 944's around... they are such cool cars to tinker with.
