weird heater problem

I just purchased this 1983 Porsche 944 and (knowing at time of purchase) the heater blows constantly (more so if I turn up the fan). And moving the Temp gauge has no effect on it. Well more like if you had the car set to outside air, because it blows harder the faster you go and it is always hot and gets hotter with the engine temp . I am wondering how to fix this so that it works properly, and my a/c is not functioning, but I will deal with that later. I would like to take care of this myself if it is not going to be difficult.

Thanks in advance for any help

Nice looking car! And welcome to the board.

Clark's Garage is a wonderful resource for info on repairing 944's. http://www.clarks-garage.com/ They have a section in their Garage Shop Manual on heater malfunctions: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/hvac-01.htm

This may not be what you are talking about but the blower on the 924-44-68 series all run any time the key is on (slow but it is running). This is normal.

You could try a couple of things. Take the fascia off the console and unplug the AC switch. If your fan stops, then there's a clue. Also, the heater fan switch itself goes bad and gets up to all sorts of tricks. Disconnect it and see what happens. The AC switch is expensive new but there are lots of good used ones floating about. The heater switch is probably cheap - but I don't know 'cause I've never bought one. You could also check under the squirrel cage just behind the firewall under the hood. The capacitor's there. Some PO may have done some creative wiring.

Ahhh the wonderful world off the 83 944 heater problem. both mine the heater doesn't work as well.
I just push the heater control valve to the closed position for now. At least I don't have to deal with the heat inside the car in the summer month.
I come to find out that the temp control doesn't have any effect as well it doesn't even change the position off the heater control valve.
I found the problem on mine and both off them is the same , the cable has snap out from the slider on the back side off the controller.

upper view (new part)

bottom view (new part)

Part Number

What I saw when I look behind where all the cable connected was one tab on the temp controll area was broken off and is not holding the cable sleeve in place.
I have looking for this part for about 2 months N/A
I did found it from Performance and I bought two off them .
Good Luck

wow.... thanks everyone for the vital information... but sadly i think that bud9344 is spot on with what he described as the problem because when i check it out there was a piece on that part that was broken and the cables were not there.... Well i guess i shall start looking for that part :/
