Why can't I get the spark wires off...
of the distributor. Don't they just pull off? (Ready for humiliating replies.)

they do have nubs(?) that hold them on, but more often, its the rubber thats sticking them.
try twisting them until they spin freely then pull....or use a scribe or a very small screwdriver that you've bent at a 90 to both gently pry the boot off the cap (do not pry the whole wire off the cap....just the stuck boot) and to brake the vacuum holding the wire on. |

Are you talking about the end with the spark plug or the other end?

because they are stuck.
because the last person to put them on didn't use dielectric grease. try the twist method. then try the pliers/channel lock pliers on them. be warned, they may get damaged.

You need to push the screws in and then turn, they're a really weird bent screw that hooks a 90 degree hook under a notch inside the distributor cap...don't worry if it takes a few tries to figure it out, it took me FOREVER, then my dad came over and figured it out in 2 minutes...

the haynes repair manual is what i go by usually, but clarks garage is my last resort if i need information right now. thanks lovemy924s !! i still cant get it off and i dont want to try because i dont want to risk stripping the screw so ill use extra caution doing it.

the haynes manual pretty much bites the big weenie. the information here and on clarks garage is much more accurate.
you need to push the "screw" straight in with some force, then turn clockwise. the top and bottom turn the same direction. assembly is the EXACT reverse of removal: you turn the screw counter-clockwise.

If you want photos of the inside of the cam gear cover with the cap on it. I have one on the bench at the moment. It should make it all clear once you see how the cap clips to the cam gear cover.
