Possible to do the exhaust side engine mount without unbolting the crossmember?
I was just under the car tracing oil leaks and saw that my exhaust side engine mount looked flat as a pancake. I can feel the idle through the whole car and also had a lot of clearance problems when I did the exhaust manifolds, so I'm pretty sure it's shot. Is it possible to replace it without dropping the crossmember like it says in clarks garage? It almost looks as if it would be possible to just unbolt the three bolts holding the piece between the engine and the mount in order to gain the clearance to remove and install the mount.
Also, can the engine be jacked up at the bellhousing instead of the oil pan like clarks garage specifies. I think I might be lucky in that most of my leaking is comming from two practically missing rear balance shaft housing plug seals and not the oil pan gasket like I thought, and I don't want to possibly disrupt the gasket and make it leak.

While it may be possible to lift at the bell housing, the safe method would be to lift from the top with an engine lift and balance kit.
![]() This would prevent your oil pan gasket worry. I did my '88 this summer and lowered the crossmember. GL John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |

Yeah, but if I can avoid screwing up the alignment, all the better. The idea is to keep it cheap, and if I can avoid having to lower the crossmember, then I'll be able to use my drive up ramps instead of having to go out and buy jackstands.

Just drop the crossmember. It was a bloody PITA to do even when I dropped the crossmember.

Removing the crossmember doesn't affect the alignment that much. 2/10 of a degree tops. And the front is the easy part for the Sears guys to align. If you're really worried about the alignment scribe the crossmember to the body before you start and you should be able to easily get it back in the same location.
I did an in-car rod bearing job once and supported it with a jackstand on the bellhousing or torque tube or something. Not ideal but I was careful and nothing got damaged.

Yeah, thanks! I'll probably be doing them once it gets warmer. It's alot more likely to happen if I don't have to pull the crossmember.
