Finally started driving my 944.

Some aircraft can be seen in the background. They are water-bombing versions of Grumman Trackers, called Firecats.

Those bubbles in the glass that you can see when viewed from certain angles, are those normal?
I understand this is due to slight differences in stress in laminated glass. You can see it with polarized lenses in your sunglasses, or in the case of that picture, a polarized filter on the camera lens. But you typically won't be able to see it with the naked eye.

If you look at certain types laminate, plex or lexan, you will also see it. You can make the marks change/move around if you push on the sheet with your finger, thereby stressing the sheet in a different way. Kinda fun. Nerdy fun.

Polarized light is also used to QA big sheets of the stuff to make sure it doesn't have defects (aka to make sure it isn't pre-stressed in such a way that it will fail).

A different process is used to build the side glass -v- the front windshield or you'd have a tough time seeing out the front with your polarized sunglasses.

Normal.

Alright I started this thread in 2009 and logged back in to check a PM. Its nice to see the thread is still on page one. There are some fantastic looking cars here! I sold my 944S 3 years ago to partially fund a return to school and a career change - I still miss the car but a KLX250S dual sport bike helps ease the pain.

Heres a picture. 944S with weltmiester springs, Koni shocks, M030 sways and Toyo RA1 tires.

Also a picture of a muddy KLX and my Saab 92X in the background.

Random enough?

Just for fun.....I lowered the spindle by one inch to help maintain lower control arm geometry and getting the front of the car down........
I've also designed monoball pickups for the rear trailing arm and conversion to coil over shocks.

Hey, Byron - obviously the guy driving the truck in your first pic didn't hit your car. ;>)

Nice looking '44, BTW.

Spotted a Red 944 (w black fusch wheels?) on the 15-S to the 10-S, lost you as I was going to 101 and you kept going 10/5. I was driving a Blue Jetta rental. This feels like that "Missed Connections" section of CL

My first car, first Porsche, daily driver for over five years now. This 924S took me halfway across the country for college and back, through six inches of fresh snow in Indiana, all without a problem. Next week it's going to the mechanic for a checkup and some maintenance and minor repairs, and afterward I'm going to do a much-needed polish and wax job, and finally get some tires mounted on the black powder-coated 928 dish wheels I have...more pictures to come once that all happens. I added up what I paid for the car, all the maintenance, the cost of gas and insurance for five years, and worked out that I've paid just $0.42 for each mile we've driven it. Best part...it still has low miles. Just passed 118K.

Looking through this thread makes me want to go work on my 944 project right now, but I can't do much to it yet, just remove more parts and I already have a big pile of 'em in the basement. Come on people, buy more of my parts. Heh. Then I can buy goodies for it sooner.

Here's my 924S when we first got it back when I was 16...over five years and 50,000 miles ago. It was so perfect.

My second Porsche...I got it for $1,450 without wheels. I got the wheels in almost perfect condition for $150. The guy had them laying around for a while and I think he just wanted to help out a fellow PCA member. 'Cause that is a ridiculous deal.

The paint job was home-done and peeling badly on the hood and roof so just for looks I sanded them down and painted them with matte spray paint. Looking at this picture makes me miss that car so much. Once I got the electrical issues worked out, it was so much fun to drive. One of those rare five-speed 928's. With no sunroof. It was number 125 from the 1979 model year.

But I couldn't afford to keep it, especially if something broke, so after making it driveable I traded it for this:

I ACTUALLY HAD FUCHS WHEELS FOR THREE WEEKS!

But I sold the 944 for $3,000, a $1,000 profit over what I had into the 928 when I made the trade. At the time my 924S needed some significant repairs, and the 944 needed a new clutch (still drove all right, though), so I had to sell one of them to fix the other.

And this is my current project, when I first brought it home. Since I was already planning to replace the nose panel, headlights, and front valance, the slight front end damage didn't bother me.

The long-lost Japanese cousin. Ha. Just another of the seven cars I've owned.

Not the best pictures but I'm too exhausted after four hours of washing, polishing, and waxing my car and installing a horn button and fixing a few little issues. My hands were shaking too much to get a very clear picture with my iPhone and lighting wasn't great. But rock chips and scratches aside, the paint is looking almost as nice again as it did when I first got it. I'll get some better pictures later.
