Koni Conversion - What length to cut???

Ordered the Koni inserts for my 87 but they are backordered and won't be in until next week. I'm trying to get the old struts cut and ready for when the new inserts arrive. I'm finding conflicting info on what length to cut the old strut housings to.

Paragon says 325mm up from the bottom: http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?article=36

A post here from a couple years ago says 50mm down from the top of the strut: Weekend Project Pics - Koni Inserts

Unfortunately, these two measurements do not get me to the same point. They are about 10mm different. Does anyone have more info???

Thinking of doing this conversion on my S2 .Cant really help with measurement,but where do Paragon get 325mm from the bottom ,that template is nowhere near that ! in fact its labelled 329mm yet the ruler is about 130/140mm

Maybe ur better off just waiting for the kit to turn up rather than take a chance and end up haveing to get some more struts

A good tip when cutting a tube with a hacksaw is to use a jubilee clip makes it much harder to go off line ,and when u tigten it up, its parrallel all the way round

I would wait til you get the new shocks and then double check the measurement. That's what I did. Remember not to cut it too short.

I would wait until you get the new struts - this is because the Koni struts have a bump on them and that is pressed into the tube to keep everything tight. This bump may be in different places on different batches of shocks. In my post below, there is a pictur of the directions where you measure the distance of the bump and then compare to the chart and that tells you how far to cut the old tube - you definately better wait unitil the new struts arrive.

Wait until you get the new inserts and look for those "bumps" he is referring to.

Like you I was worried at the thought of cutting my struts in the wrong place but once you are actually holding the strut and the new insert it is quite self explanatory. There is a fair amount of tolerance in the location of the cut as long as those "bumps" are firmly inside the old strut body, the top of the cut gets hidden by the rubber boot anyway
