944 Timing problem

I was driving my 86 944 and the timing gear (#6 in the picture) I believe the bearing went out on it and now it's out of time. I was just wondering if I'm looking at bent valves, piston damage, ect? Never had anything like this happen and was wondering what kind of damage I might be looking at,if any.

WOW, you joined the Pelican forum in August of 2004 and this is your first post!!

Welcome,

If what you posted caused valve damage-most likely outcome, you can expect to find at least 2 valves bent, maybe more. Actually this is not serious.

If you have a tool box, it is within you ability to get the old head off, send it to member many944s for an exchange. Read his web page for what a good machine shop should do.
http://www.benms.com/944head.html

The other way to do it is to pay a machine shop to replace at least 2 or more valves, install valve guides, machine the surface and grind the valves and head.
Call to see what a shop will charge.

Gaskets and misc parts (belts and rollers) required to fix other stuff will cost about $300 to $500.

Time to repair and wait for more parts and machine work- about 10 to 14 days

If you take your time it is a very doable and simple job. It will just cost a lot.

If---continued...
If your car is in your garage, you should do a leak down test to see if any damage has happened.
By showing the roller in the diagram, I guess you have taken off the belt covers.

If you say the timing is off, does this mean you can still start the car? I would not try to start the car until you replace all the rollers and get new belts-which you have to do anyway.

Did the belt break, or is it rapped around the crank pulley? if your only a few teeth off, and if it did it while the car was at idle i would say you've got lucky. But first see how many teeth you are off by. I have done the HG job and have to say it's alot of fun. I wouldn't recommend doing one on a dohc 928. but it's very do able. As john said you can probably get it done for around $300, I was able to get a HG set for under a 100$ at auto haus. and was able to get my machine shop bill down to under 200$, and that was with 4 new valves, and guides.

I haven't had the cover off yet but I put a belt on it a couple years ago and it looked like it needed to be replaced then. It has been making some noise the past week or so and just finally gave out last night. I'm guessing the bearing wore out enough that the roller just fell off as I was driving. The car died and won't restart. Basicly just a lack of time and money to fix it a couple years ago when it needed it. Yeah I've been on here since 2004 and just made my first post last night,I don't get in a hurry to do stuff, lol. Thanks for the help.

Not starting does usually mean you do have some damage if the roller bearings did fail.
In the next week/months (years) , you will open up the belt covers and know where to start. I just got my issue of Harbor Freight Tools and the leak down tester is $29.99 until 24 August, 2009. A good tool to have.

The belt didn't break,I'm thinking that roller just fell off, bearing went out, either way it's out of time now. It did stop running at idle so maybe that limited the damage,I hope. Thanks for your help also.

That's not what I wanted to hear, lol. It's my fault for not dealing with it when it needed it I guess. I won't be able to put this one off,it's the only thing I have to drive. Thanks again....
