Windshield issues

Hello,

I have a rather large gap between the side aluminum trim and the windshield glass on my 1984 944 and I am not sure what goes there. I assume it is a rubber seal but I cannot find them on Pelican. Attached are a few pictures. One is a picture of the bottom of the windshield in which it is just sitting on the pegs. I am wondering if I am missing some kind of seal or trim piece down there as well as it all seems rather exposed. The windshield has a big crack in it and I think the PO was preparing to remove it and forget to give me these missing parts. Any help in figuring out what I am missing would be appreciated.

Thanks

On the first generation (83 to 85-1) 944's there is only the sealing set - 477.898.011.A - and the bottom only has plastic retainer pads/stops with screws. If with these in place you still have a gap you may have a 924 windshield which is smaller than the 944. The Gen II (85.5 to 91) windshields are even larger than Gen I by this much again. The sealing kit comes with a type of butyl rubber to seal it 360*

Good luck - have pfunn

On the early cars the windshield trim is 3 pieces; a center section and LH and RH side pieces. The center section sits on top of the windshield; no gap between the trim and the glass. However, the side pieces don't. There is a gap. I believe that is what your first picture shows. I'm presuming that you show the trim clips in the photo.

The bottom part of the windshield sits on (2) rectangular stops (pegs). Your picture shows that stop. No other seal or trim is there.

It looks correct to me. The later cars have a different windshield seal.

When you do replace the cracked windshield be very careful when removing it because I think the two side and the upper trim seals are no longer available - may take awhile to find them.

Also if you need someone/a shop to do the windshield most will ask around $900 to replace it - but there are plenty of places out there that will only charge around $250 or so. In fact I had mine replaced through Clear View/ Diamond auto glass. They came to my shop and did the work here at $238.95 for labor and most materials - I supplied the one piece inner seal and the outer frame (86 - 944).

The 3 piece trim set can be purchased from Porsche but the cost will take your breath away......... I found a center piece on Ebay; it was new, never used but I had to buy the LH and RH sides. The cost was north of $90.

A simple trim tool should be all you need to remove the trim pieces unless the windshield was installed incorrectly. I would get new clips too.

Just had my windshield professionally replaced due to chip turning into a crack before I could get to a shop to have the chip repaired-very bumpy roads here in England. The clips were rusty( and one snapped as it was about rusted through), but the shop had none in stock so carefully reused them after I'd painted them with de-rust treatment. The whole job took a little less than 3 hours. Got glass with a nice green top tint.
Incidentally the shop warned against using silicone on bonded in windshields because they claim that silicone eats the bonding.

Hello,

Thanks for everybodys help on this. I found some pillars on ebay that included a "rare" set of foam inserts that fill the that gap on my early 944 for $30. I will post a picture as soon as I get it in.

I called around and found several places that will replace the windshield for $250 which is not bad. It will be handy to have the extra pillars in case they are damaged on removal.

Thanks again. Without this forum I would be lost.

Hi,
If you can purchase some of the clips that hold the aluminium trims prior to having the windshield changed you will be able to replace those that are rusty. My windshield installer told me these clips are best replaced with the windshield out.
