Whats the deal: 924S

Ten years ago, I moved out of Italian cars (Lancias, mainly) and bought this super clean original 924S. Books, Records, maintenence receipts, etc. I bought it as a garage queen with occasional weekend use, and its been a very good car.
Now, I'd just like a change. At $3950, I thought it would be gone. You cant even buy an MGB for that, let alone a galvanized body and build quality.
No response. These are awfully nice cars, quick, handle well, rustproof..
I dont get it. What can you buy for that little to get this much and....nothing.
Isnt there anyone out there? Or I'll just keep it and drive it to work!

At a minimum, it's the economy. $3950 sounds like a fair price based on what described, maybe even a great price. But depending on what part of the country you're in, people may simply not have the expendable income. That and the fact that the 924 / 944 are not really collectible, so they're generally undervalued when compared to their siblings. By comparison, decent examples of the 928 can be had in the same price range your asking...maybe not in top condition, but good enough. It's just a tough market.

What year is the car, and where are you located? When was the last belt service on the car?

One problem is plenty of guys ignore the 924, as the 944 is more desireable, and can be found for similar money.

The 924S really IS a 944, but it still says "924" on the car.

Looks nice! How many miles? Tough sell in general right now. x2 on the geography/local markets impacting you sale. Yes, the 924S is overlooked and those really in the know, look for the '88s with more hp. Where have you posted it for sale?

mid november might not be the ideal time of year either depending on where you are located. Try in the spring

And it is a wide body. I mean ya the 924 is more aerodynamic... But the 944 is way more aggressive looking.... And the 924s has the old school interior....

Thanks for your input. The 924S is a1987, 93k miles, and about 6500 miles ago, it had belts, waterpump, power steering rack and pump and motot mounts. I am in central Ohio.
I tried the usual Craigslist, etc but its all time wasters. Its an awfully nice car!

white924s I'll suggest that when trying to sell the car you'll need to add good pics of it ,pics is sometime this little extra bite that will make the sale,by looking at those you send you can't really tell what the car look like include ( pics -front-rear -both side view-more int &specially the engine bay wheels&tire size ).Don't really know why it not selling ,two thing come to my mind (market is saturated with 944/924 or like Dave mention late season,your car seem to be well taking off & in pretty good shape so don't despair at that price they will be a taker somewhere.Honda ,agree 100% with you I miss my old int & the raw feeling behind the wheels.Just before I sold mine I got ride of those conical lens & install flat one, little pna to do but does it ever worth it, that was the only thing about the old int that bother me all those years.

Keep it and Drive IT!

Put a couple upgrades or repair in the suspension, tires, shocks, maybe the small throttle cam or a chip, new speakers.

Make it your "new" car and enjoy the car fully for the reasons you bought it 10 years ago.

A lot of it also has to do with marketing. Some people instinctively like the wide stance of the 944 better. But if you market the car properly, as in, faster than a 944 (of the same powerplant), sleeker than a 944, etc. and point out the advantages of the 924S, you might spark more interest.

I agree with cwiert. Spring is a much better time to sell a car like this. If the car is truly pristine, any serious buyer isn't going to want to drive it in the winter, especially up here in the rust belt. Very few people can stand delaying gratification of a new purchase like this. So be patient, wait until spring, market it properly, and do it at a time when people are more likely to have a few $$$ burning a hole in their pockets, like tax refund time. Impulse buy + instant gratification = happy seller and happy buyer. :-D

I'll admit... I am one of those ppl... I would have looked right past this when I was buying.... I just like that wide low look....

Set up a really good ad on enthusiast sites like this board. Include an enormous amount of pictures. Be sure to highlight any issues the car might have (they all have SOMETHING wrong with them, being upfront makes you look like a good seller).

Put together a spreadsheet of all the work you've ever done to the car, right down to the oil changes (hopefully you've kept track). Make all of this information front and center.

Set up a video camera, and shoot video of you starting the car from cold, and show the exhaust. Get a friend to sit in the car as you keep shooting the video and go for a 2 minute drive, demonstrating the shifting action, braking, etc.

People from far away might be interested, but without this level of detail they surely aren't going to make the trek and risk discovering a lemon.

Go overboard with details, and buyers on sites like this will respond.

I bought a BMW over 1000 miles away, but only because the seller had a ludicrous amount of detail posted on the car; combined with a PPI, I felt good enough to do it.

The reason you are having a tough time selling your car is that you have a very limited clientel out there. I experienced the same thing a few years ago when I was trying to sell my 87 944S that had only 89,000 miles on it. It was a super nice car but Porsche has a reputation, especially 944's for being very expensive to maintain and unreliable. It took almost two years and dropping the price by 50 per cent before I sold it. I sold it to a young man who always wanted a Porsche.

I have been trying to sell my 87 944 for a couple of months and haven't even had anyone who would come look at. If your away from a population center it will be even harder to sell it. Just look at EBAY, there are tons of them listed but no one wants to give anything for them. If it were a turbo, yes you probably could find a buyer.

I was rather shocked when I was reading white924S's post. It sounded remarkably similar to something I had read days ago, and then when I saw the craigslist + central ohio it clicked :P
