84 No start

84 with a no start problem, then into hot start problem, into nothing works not even cranking problem. New DME relay, along with 85.5+ DME/ AFM. Fuel Pumps hums. No tach bounce, yet. Did a few times with brittle sensor wires(parts ordered). Are there any tests that I could do in the mean time to try and find what my problem is? This has been an on-going problem. Replaced FPR, Damper, Ignition coil, starter, battery 6 months ago (present with 12.2 DCVs). Cracked the nut at the end of the fuel rail, some fuel spilled out. Did get spark a few days after last start.

If your sensor wires are brittle or in poor shape, that is likely the problem. I had a similar no start on my '83 that I pretty much changed everything but the sensors. Nothing worked. I changed the sensors and it started immediately and has continued to start normally. It is back in my "circle of trust"

Just got the sensors in less than a hour ago. I just put them in, but I will have to screw with the adjustment. I have an adjustment tool a Rennlist member let me use. Just an aluminum shaft with a ring so it wont fall into bellhousing, .08 longer than an actual sensor. Tried the tool a few times, but couldnt seem to get the correct spacing at the flywheel, thats what I am hoping anyways, because I didnt get any tach bounce with the new sensors, but did with the old ones.

I just put in new sensors, and I am pretty sure that I have the right gap, but I still have no tach bounce. I have replaced the DME and AFM with an 86 (OK to do if in pairs), new DME relay, put in a used starter, used FPR (looks fairly new) used damper, used ignition coil, replaced rubber seals on fuel injectors. I am going to take out my starter and battery (12.1DCVs, dont know CCAs) and have them bench tested in a little bit. I have no idea where to look next on this car. Last time she started was in July I think, its been awhile. When it last started, it would run for no longer then 20 mins, then shut off, and wouldnt start when it was hot, I had to wait 3 hours to start her back up. I did a spark test about a week later and she was getting spark. Today I put catch can at end of fuel rail, cracked nut, and tried to start the car for a second, gas was spewing out. Shes getting fuel, most likely the right amount of pressure. Lets say the starter and battery are both dead, would the car still have tach bounce? Any advice? Thanks guys.

The engine on starting has to show at least 200 RPM to get a TACH Bounce of 1/16th inch.

Cheers,
Larry

I'm having a similar problem with my 84 944. What was the issue that fixed yours?

Set the wrong gap with the sensors a couple weeks ago, but thought it was the right gap of .8mm. I then went out and bought a used starter, put it in, and still wasnt getting a tach bounce. Yesterday found out that the starter I bought was rusted and I had to break the gear shaft loose. Then I screwed with the speed and reference sensors again, and got the correct gap.

Is you fuel pump humming when you try and start the car? Does you tach bounce when trying to start? Maybee crack the nut at the end of the fuel rail to see if you are getting fuel to the line (3/4'' wrench to crack the nut, a rag, and a cup that will fit so fuel wont spray all over) try and start the car and you should see fuel spraying into the cup.) Good Luck.
