Question sudden "wine" sound from firewall area

944 Auto 1988

"Wine" high pitch sound coming from bell housing fire wall area. It changes sound, higher pitch and louder as rpm increases.

Makes most noise when trans is downshifting approaching stop.

(But only going down road, does not make sound if parked or on jack stands wheels free spinning in gear, running)

Ideas?

Pilot bearing or first TT bearing wearing out? Did you ever have a water hose or heater valve fail? If so, the coolant can damage the pilot bearing.

I did find that the splash guard was missing at the bell housing, ( did not relalize that) and daughter drove through heavy rain the day it started. We are still driving it but limited, noise is about same as in october, but very anoying. If it is the pilot bearing and it fails completly is there a risk of major damage to other stuff? Or can it wait till the lift gets free? lol (other project currently on lift) and not looking forward to pulling engine again.

update: after motor pull

To recap. 1988 944 NA Auto Trans

Right after a rain a sudden sound starting coming from firewall area. Will NOT make the winning sound if on jack stands. Sound is at all speeds but increases at decelerating. No on the water leak.

Well after finally getting around to fixing, and pulling motor (did not go by pulling trans, long story there) anyway same sound is coming from front and center of car. Wasted alot of hours it seems.

When motor was out I thought I had found the problem because the pilot shaft bearing had been spinning on the shaft and had worn it down a little. It looks like the pilot bearing was very stiff and caused the spinning. I built up the shaft and put in a new bearing. I also spun, pushed and pulled the shaft, no slack was felt.

When I go back in this time I am going through the trans. Even if I have to cut support out, and replace.

Any other Ideas.

I've occasionally had the sound of a beer being cracked open from that area, but never a wine.

Hi, read your post. It could be a torque tube bearing starting to go.

If tube bearings are bad, can I tell by turning the shaft by hand? Or do I just have to pull bearings and hope?

Thanks

Hi, I doubt you can tell by turning it by hand. The cheapest route would be to throw in a known good used torque tube from someone parting out a car but the best route would be to buy a rebuilt assembly outright if it is indeed the torque tube. Sounds to me like it could be your tube but you will want to take the auto trans out of the equasion for sure. I am not to familiar with auto transaxles to know what they sound like when they are going south.

Thanks for advice. I guess i will pull trans and tube out and check further. I may put this project on the back burner for now and let it set, and get back to finishing the 83 project first, all it needs is paint and its ready to sell. LOL.

Well, It finally failed!
Sound got very loud and bang stopped pulling. At least now should find problem. I have not pulled the trans out yet its just sitting in drive for now. But I learned that the sound must be reflecting or something to sound like its in middle or firewall. But in fact must have been transaxle.

I guess I will pull it out this winter , but being it stopped pulling and it had a bad grinding sound then its gota be the transaxle right?
