944s project need help!!!
I purchased an 87-944s 16v not running and it came with an engine but before i condem the original one i pulled the head off and im very confused.i was told the valves were bent, that`s ok, but,i don`t see any signs of damage but i do see something i don`t like, oil between the cylinders!!!! can anyone help me i have alot of questions as this came as a basket case.
like where between the cylinders? any pix? in the block or in the head, or just on the outside of the engine? clean oil or dirty oil?
just pulled head off and i found oil between all cyl, coolant galley ,also there is a tiny hole on the wall just inside the collant galley??not sure what this is or if it is major.seems if you look down around the cylinder walls there is a tiny hole, best way to describe it is were the oil filter housing attches to the block then inside the collant wall is a tiny hole???
can you stick a wire or guitar strin in there, or is it a casting imperfection? sounds like an oil spill. will have to look at another block i guess. someone here will show up shortly with a better answer.
is there an obvious difference in the cleanliness/deposits of each cylinder? and the plugs if they are still in the head?
was the timing belt still ojn the engine? did it turn freely by hand before head removal? thats a real time saving diagnostic step before disassembly.. Look carefully at the top of the pistons for an unsuual semicurcular depression or scratch mark. of ten its onot on all pistons, just the ones that hit before it stopped. when ckleaaning the pistons with scotch brite, liik for minute craccks in the top near the half moon impressions.
sounds like u bought yourself a dud....
take some pictures. there's so many of wordy posts that can be helped by a single picture. what does the headgasket look like? is there like a gaping hole on one or multiple cylinders? is there oil seepage marks on the valve shaft? are the cylinder walls clean? scratches? pits? take pictures! |
don't worry, mine was a
dud" when I got it from the bank repo man. But do not expect this to become a totally trouble free car till you do quite a few things to it. Look on Clarks garage for the list of things you should have done before buying it, and work from there. You are going to learn a lot, but you have certainly come to the right place in the world for help!!! |
the car is in really nice shape,no tears, nothing missing right down to the orig touchup paint.here`s the thing, i was just informed the valves all need to be replaced 8 exhaust are bent and the intake are all pitted, but it came with another engine the problem is it`s an 8 valve so can i swap the head????
fix that head for the performance. also, you will know what you have and will not have to repeat this procedure in the near future.
can the 8v engine be used w/the 16v cyl head???
u could......if u wanted to spend another $1000 on a 16v head plus custom pistons to clear the valves
i have just uploaded a pic of the hole
look at the pic of the water galley in front of the stud as you look down you will see this hole.
look in my garage for the pics
just link the image in your post. instead of making people click 3 times to see what you're talking about.
the hole does not look oem and it does not look like damage. get a CLEAR picture. does yer camera have macro mode? see if u can take a pic inside the cylinder. |
this is not a cell phone camara, 12pix cannon
it's just that the picture has been resized into a picture that's like 600x300.
like i said from that shot, it doesn't look like normal damage, since it's ... so perfectly round. where does the hole punch thru to? is that front or rear of block? |

That's a really nice, clean looking car. Congratulations on buying it!
Like the others said, it's impossible to really see anything on the pics you posted. What you can see does look good. If you have a macro lens, take a picture of the hole with that and post it. What did the previous owner say about the condition of the car? What led you to think it had bent valves? Was the timing belt/chain intact? What do the valves look like? As to oil between the cylinders, that could have run down there when you took the head off. Did you pull the dipstick before you tore it apart and notice anything unusual? How about the coolant recovery tank? Just coolant or is it there oil in it as well? It's a really nice looking car. It oughta be a fun project getting it going. |
