RCI Racing Seats??????????
They look very comfy, also kind of vintage. Did I mention that they are CHEAP. I have never seen one in person. I have searched and have not found much. Does anyone know these seats...they look very comfortable.

The apc seats look far better put together. Although remebr u will need to fab brackets and also make sure the hieght of the seat isn't to high! Also keep in mind seat hieght with a helmet if u autocross or anything

lol im highly considering buying some APC seats!
i like the simple look, they are deffinetly cheap! and i would like to think that these would be better than original no lumbar support seats that are starting to break down.... they are like 330$ for a pair...and come with sliders, they also swing forward so you can use the back seat area... im guessing if need be you could take it to a store that does seats and have some made for about 200$ or so...making 500$ seats.... or mabey you could fab some... if you look around google you can find a DIY someone did with a mustang and these seats.. my only thing with these seats i wanna know it the quality, i have never felt them before, nor know anyone with them although they seem to be decent in the ricer/other "racey" people. no one seems to post about the longetivity of them....

You do get what you pay for. That said, I want to buy some fixed back seats. If I buy a FIA approved seat, it will be made of fiberglass. How much safer is fiberglass?
I am not knowledgeable about seat safety in any way, I wish someone that was would chime in. In the case of forward momentum, the harness attached to the roll bar will keep you in place. What I do know about crashes is that there can be all kinds of unpredictable, and massive forces acting in different directions. Race cars use fiberglass...how can that be safe? Unless the seat is braced at the back, or attached to the roll bar. It is a laughable subject, because the seats are so cheap. |

Actually, FIA certified seats can be non fiberglass (such as the Sparco Sprint and the OMP TRS). What is important is that FIA certified seats have been designed to keep racing drivers safe. I am not sure on everything the FIA tests during certification, but it would include things like making sure the seat does not buckle or twist during an accident. Wit seats (as with most things in racing) you get what you pay for and the more expensive seats are normally better and most importantly, more comfortable.
If you read the NASA CCR (rule book) you will see that seats that do not have certain certifications have to use a seat brace. Even the seats that you can be used without a brace can only be used like that while the seat is in it's certification period (varies but is normally 5 years). I am sure the SCCA rule book is similar. What will your use be for the seat/car?

My car is not going to race, it will be for track use and to just drive. I wonder if getting a FIA certification is an expensive venture for the manufacturer? It would be reflected in the price. Maybe I could use an RCI seat with a brace? I do not know what these braces are. I used to have a carbon fiber Momo seat, VERY light. I would have a hard time seeing it stand up to very much in a crash.
As for my racing....Paul Newman never raced until he was 47 years old. That gives me a few more years. |

Actually some of the lower price FIA certified seats from OMP and Sparco can be picked up from around $300 and up.

I personally think those just look like cheap seats for a drag car thats been gutted... as long as these seats meet quality standards then I would have no problems with them. That being kept in mind if you have a higher spending budget, personally I would go with a more reputable name, but to each his own.

I don't think the FIA certifies any recliners, only fixed seats. Braces are only useful if you have or plan to install a roll bar into the car such as the bolt in Safety Devices one, it would not work with the popular Redline bolt in. Without said back brace, I would not trust a seat like the APC on the track in a rear end collision. I've seen those seats at Pepboys and for the street it's fine, but the track is a different story where going ass end at high speed into a non forgiving object is very possible.
I am also a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I would at the cheapest look into Corbeau's which I can tell you are not very comfortable on long drives. The padding is just not very good quality. I am using the mobile version of Pelican so I can't tell your location, but I am selling a set of Momo recliners with proper brackets (Wedge Engineering) and sliders to install into a 944. Everything is up in LI, NY if interested. I just made the switch to fixed backs. Last edited by Techno Duck; 01-02-2010 at 11:27 AM.. |

Those first plastic seats are identical to the ones in my go cart. They sucked azz and weren't too great either time I rolled it either.... Those are more of a Dune Buggy seat....
