Engine not turning over part II

Ok, this weekend still could not get my 87 944na to turn over. From my last post it was determined that my engine had hydro locked due to excessive fuel in #4 cylinder. Think the problem was a kinked fuel return line. I have checked the belts and timing all look good. Have good compression on all 4 cylinders. Engine rotates freely by hand without plugs in. A soon a I put in a plug and try to turn it over with the starter, it stops a the compression stroke. Pull the plugs, turns over. What is the problem? Bad starter? Something to due with the exhaust valves? Crankshaft problem? Did something happen when the oil was thinned out from the the fuel that was mixed in with the oil? Car has 160K. Has always run perfectly until last weekend. It's a weekend driver.

Thanks,
Alan

This is weird..

Ok, pull the DME relay out of the fuse board.

Install the three plugs into the cylinders you think are good and see if the engine will crank... You need to isolate either the cylinder problem or the actaul fault.

Have you checked the compression and leakdown?..I'm beginning to think you have a head gasket failure.

Hi , well you didnt say if you changed the oil or not?
Also you didnt say if you removed the fuelinjectors and verified there operation.
If the timing is on and you have verified it by checking the timing marks on the flywheel and the cam housing, the belt is good, then the starter should turn the engine.........unless the battery is weak or there is a loose elex connection (Battery terminal is loose, or wire going to the starter is loose)
Also see if the cyl is filling up with fuel......... but if you checked the injectors this would tell you........ also are the cylinders free of liquids IE fuel,......... turn the engine over with the starter motor with all the plugs out, make shure there is no liquid squirting from the plug holes... this would be the most logical reason as to why the engine wont turn over... also make shure the plugs are in the spark plug wire s and grounded to the engine when you turn it over with the starter and keep them away from the plug holes, so you dont have a fire...... If you didnt already change the oil and filter, and verify that the oil is at the corrcet level.

The only other thing that might be happening is that one of the valves is bent or one on the connecting rods or a piston is damaged..... however if you say you have good compression then this is ruled out........Stan

You say that the car is 'hydrolocked'. Usually if the car is hydrolocked you will hear the engine hitting while attempting to crank it as the pistons go up and down.

Well this is what I've done so far. Changed oil. Compression check. Found that that 1 & 2 cylinder @ 140 psi 3 & 4 at 160psi. Is this good or bad? Fuel injectors removed and checked. No leaks. Battery electrical checked terminals cleaned. Timing marks checked OK. Engine has 160K on it.

What's next. Britwrench how is a leakdown test done?

Engine gets to compression stroke and stops with plugs in, turns fine with plugs out.

What's next?????

Try turning it over by pushing it forward in 5th gear by hand. Leave ignition off, but have plugs screwed in. If you can push it and engine turns two revolutions, next step is to push start it, obviously with ignition on. Or, for step 1, you can turn engine over twice a with wrench on crank pulley nut. Just turn it in the correct direction.

It sounds like your starter to me.

Surely you have the correct plug in there and the piston is not hitting the plug...................
