944 engine noise.

Noise started 3 days ago. I can not hear it at idle, but at 2500 rpm and beyond it gets loud. its a tapping from what sounds like the top-end. I first thought lifter but I drive it regularly. So I just did a ATF run and an oil cahange, that did not help. During the oil change I noticed a fair amount of metal shavings on my magnetic drain plug "not cool". There is a video on youtube that worries me. This guy has the exact same noise he also thought bad lifter but ended being a broken valve seat that fell into his cylinder and ended up puttin his piston into the wall. Ahhhhhh!!!! any ideas.

lifters usually sound off real bad at idler before a lot of oil pressure is built up. Even worn cam lobes sound off at idle. What kind of metal was in the shavings?

Metal slivers in the oil pan usually would be the rod bearings are worn. Number 2 is the normal one to go first. It could also be the main bearings but cross your fingers

If the car ever had the oil cooler gaskets go bad and the coolant mixed with the oil, this mixture will eat rod bearings. Porsche wants the rod bearings changed if this happens.

Search for rod bearing failure. Here is a link from member TexasBlake....

Rod Bearings - Porsche 951 - www.texasblake.com

As you can see it is a time consuming but doable job.

how much oil pressure does your gauge show?

bearings don't usually just go out all of a sudden. it's usually a long term wear.

Thanks for the tips guys!! I guess I will start from the top and work my way down. Oil pressre continues to read normal, just under 5 bar at start up and leveling at 2 after reaching temp. After doing some more research I think the Noise and the metal shavings might be different problems. The noise does not lessen after reaching operating temp, but I,m gonna the lifters anyway. If you have anymore Ideas please hit me up, Thanks again.

"but I,m gonna the lifters anyway" neun44.

If I understand somewhat, you plan to either use some SeaFoam to clean the lifters or remove the cam housing and check the lifters and ?????

Anyway, if you use SeaFoam follow the can directions.
If you lift the cam housing here is a lifter link from member many944s.

Don't buy new lifters. They are crap. Better to find some original Porsche lifters that are still good. The OEM parts being sold by Porsche are made by INA and have proven very prone to early failure.

What sort of metal particles are we talking about? Fine paste, slivers, flecks, shavings, chunks? Are there any non-ferrous shavings or flakes in the oil that could be bearing material. They look like shiny brass colored confetti, often brass colored on one side and silver on the other. I've always seen at least a few very small particles every time I change oil in just about every car I've done, but alot more than that is bad. Maybe it's a lifter eaten up by a bad cam lobe, or a lifter that's disintegrating and eating a cam lobe, but that should make noise at idle.

No, it was a fuzzy ring of shavings around the inner center of the plug.

That magnet always seems to collect something even during normal operation, mostly black metal sludge and occasionally a few very small shavings that are big enough to make fuzz. Anything more than that might be a bad indication. If it is being caused by the valvetrain, it should be obvious once the cam housing comes off.
