Ignition lock problem

I have a 1987 924S with 96,000 miles. Recently a small problem with the ignition has gotten worse. The key won't turn, as if the steering wheel is locked, and has to be jiggled around in order to get it to turn. I don't know what exactly the problem is. I am wondering if this is something I can fix, or if I need to take it to a mechanic, and how much would it cost?

To replace the entire Ignition lock assembly is not that difficult of an operation - especially if you go to Clark's Garage Home Page Once there go to the Garage Shop Manual (Left hand column) and to the section of ELECT-25, Ignition Switch Replacement - there is a full write up with good pictures and all.

Sounds like you ignition lock assembly is getting worn and sticky - hope this helps

Having the same issue on the same year no less. Was wondering if graphite use was possible? It works great on the door locks but I wasn't sure due to the fact that it's not a regular key and lock situation.

Graphite is fine in the ignition switch but before you replace the whole thing get a new key made and try it first, it could just be worn out.

Thanks everyone. I sprayed some WD-40 into it and it's fine...for now. I'll be back if it starts acting up again.
