Strange sudden noise

(I copied these from a post I placed over on the dorki page)

Well, took the 44 out and the third speed bump caused a nasty grumble that Becky (my wife) thinks is an exhaust leak but I'm afraid it could be something much worse. I don't think we impacted the bump but we may have. What ever the noise is the frequecy goes up with engine speed.

Quick look at the exhaust, nothing apparent (Cali car). Next I lifted up the rear to listen for tranny noise, rotated the wheels, no noticable noise in gear and out of gear.

Clutch in or out it sounds the same. It really sounds as if it is coming from the engine bay. The only way I can describe it is to take tappet clatter (w/ only 1 or 2 making it) make that sound a little more tinny and then increase the volume by 10x. Really a nasty sound, and unnerving.

Oil pressure is reading over 5 bar cold at idle. Can't see or feel any leak around the header. If you heard this you'd tell me to shut he down FAST. Oh and she is a little harder to start, both from a turning over point and how many engine cycles before firing.

Well here you go: compression 1-210, 2-165, 3-185, 4-90. And to add insult to injury, coolant blew out of 4 when I was checking 3. So in a few miles I somehow managed to take a motor with leak downs in the 3-5 range and good clean oil to this.

I had a noise arrive like that. It would come and go. Sounded like my TT bearings were going out. Drove me nuts for 2 weeks. I looked everywhere, only to find it in the strangest place I could think of. The change I keep in the ashtray was rattling around.
This may not be your problem, but just a reminder that noises come from the last place you would think to look.

Between the coolant blow, the compression and the noise, it's time for a new motor.

Ouch! Oil feed tube has let go?

Serious heartache but gotta be ruled out ASAP! leading to oil starvation/overheating

Shame to diagnose a blown head gasket without finding the cause first.

Pulled it out of the driveway to make it easier to tow. Hard to start, once running, killed a million mosquitos and became a real water pumper. I'm not talking vapor out the tail pipe, I'm talking water spray out the tail pipe!

Rough luck

Sorry about your situation. When a car looses a cylinder or two it runs so rough that there are LOTS of exhaust noises and rattling. There is a one in a million chance that re torquing the HG will temp fix the situation but you are better off pulling the head. Here's to hoping it is just a gasket.

It really sounds like a rod knock due to hydralock. A new motor it the cheapest way To go as this will be dome by my tech.

knock knock knockin on heavens door...

Oh, there is indubitably some hydro lock going on. Whether the lower end has lost a bearing or a wrist pin....hard to say from my point of view as I haven't heard it. I would try spinning the engine with the plugs out (and FI and ignition disabled) via the starter and listen for knocks and such. The lower ends are pretty tough so there IS a slight chance that it is still OK (no promises). In any event, you have to pull the head. Pulling the pan as well will give you a chance to check the lower end if you are so inclined. I try to stay with the original mill if possible to keep it all original.

I did that while checking compression. COuldn't hear anything strange. I may keep the engine and do a rebuild myself to have as a spare. For now, the fastest, easiest to do is a swap since I have to do a clutch anyway. There is local tech, who does a lot of work for the 44cup croud, who charges $700 for the swap. Can't beat that.

Bets?

You might be able to beat it for the cost of the head gasket. I am assuming that another engine will cost something. Replacing an engine because you need a clutch anyway seems a little...idunno...strange. The price quoted is pretty reasonable though and it is your call.

Remember that my engine has about 201 on the clock and I'm looking for something with 100 or less. So it's the combo of clutch, price and miles.
