Replacing valve springs with head installed

87 924S- 120,000 miles, recent front end service (10,000 miles ago)

Looks like valve springs on #3 are broken. Can I set to TDC, apply compressed air and replace the springs with the head on the motor? Trying to mitigate cost but do not want to be foolish either. Shop is willing to try this as I do not have time to do myself unfortunately.

Thoughts?

Morrie

I haven't done it on the 944, but I've used both methods on other cars to change valve seals/springs. I prefer the more old school way of pulling all the spark plugs, feeding a rope into the spark plug hole and gingerly turning the motor squish it and put pressure on the valve.

The other way works great on a newer motor. On older ones it can be hard to keep enough air pressure due to blow by, I had a valve fall that way before.

I don't think it would fall very far on a 944 engine, if the piston is @ TDC. I'm sure you would be able to pull it back up.

Although I used the compressed air method when I did the seals on my 77 924 way back when, I think I've been roped in to using the other method if I ever need to do it in the future.
