Aluminum control arm to steel
I know this might sound strange, but I want to take off my aluminum control arms and put steel one on. My current arms are wore out. I just replaced the ball joints and it still shakes. The aluminum was too badly wore. I don't have the money to buy new alum. arms so I want to replace them with steel arms. I am only using the car as a daily driver, no racing. I am pretty sure that the steel and alum. are interchangeable. Will all the bushings work from my alum. arms.
Thanks

Yep, you will need new swaybar droplinks at the arm and the rear bracket that moves centerline to outside to adjust caster. This only works with 85/2 and 86 cars, since the 87+ offset means different dimensions for the control arms.

my stepdad went from ali to steel arms on hiis '86 n/a racecar with no problems. as long as your're early offset i think you should be fine. you might want moore detailed advise than this though. [edit]there you go!

The 83 to 85 early steel control arms are basically the same in dimensions as the 85 late and 86. All of them were the early offset with mounting points/parts being same, if you use the steel A-Arm mounts. The difference is in the removable/replaceable ball joints on the early steel arms, with changeover aluminum arms the ball joints were not so easily replaced. Plus the early steel A-Arms were noticeably weaker than the aluminum A-Arms. For street only you may never notice the difference.

the early arms are easy enough to seam weld for a bit of extra insurance but for a roadcar its not really necessary.

Steel to Alum ? 85.5 arms on a 83?
If someone wants to use Aluminum 85/5 arms on an 83 what additional parts are necessary ? Mainly the sway bar drop links? Have to look into the camber adjuster mentioned. I had a guy looking to buy some used lower arms for his 83 but may be nice to upgrade since I have the 85.5 parts available 4 him.

There is no advantage to changing to aluminum control arms from steel. Except to the seller!
