944 Susp. mods

I have an '86 944 NA. I need some suspension recommendations for AX. This is my daily driver and I am looking for some reasonable mods to be more competitive in my local PCA events...... like some Turbo sway bars and springs, or what have you that I can easily access.

Check your regions rule book. Every region is a little different in terms of what they allow. The last thing you want to do is go into a modified class because you will be destroyed by the modified class 914's and early 911's.

What tires are you running? Even bone stock, ratted out suspension will go 1-2 seconds quicker on great tires

If you run with PCA, the national parade rules allow a lot of changes on the suspension. I agree with Techno, check the rules of the group you are running with. Getting pushed into a higher class can screw you. Once your in a modified class, you will need to spend a LOT of money to be competitive.

If starauto passes, I'd be interested in the swaybars. I'm also in NJ, so maybe a ride is in order. Thanks.

If you are like me and like to build and tinker with what you already have, I suggest that you be patient in your purchases. You do not have to buy the best stuff, but you can buy great suspension parts at a very reasonable price.

Used Koni adjustable shocks are easy to find, I paid $100 for a pair. I paid $60 for 951 S sway bars. I paid allot for my new front Koni Coil-overs. And I spent $200 for 28 mm torsion bars. All in all it is not to expensive when you do the work yourself. The installation of the torsion bars is a BUGGER of a job.

Above all you do not have to spend big money to have fun, many expensive suspension mods are money down the drain unless you are a very good driver and have the money to burn. My fun does not come with a big price tag.
Something to keep in mind is that you will change the ride quality of the car. If you drive your car every day you will need to compromise on what you do.

I have a pair of non-adjustable koni yellows too. I dont know exactly how old or how many miles are on them but I know they are no more than 7 years old and at the max maybe 35000 max miles. I dont know what poundage the srpings are though. I measured the diameter of the coil and it measured 12.07mm. If someone could shed some light on what poundage this is? I'll give them away for $60 for the pair with the purchase of the 968 M030 sway bars.

Totally up to you.

Oh here are the 968 M030 swaybars:

My problem is that my region just throws all 924s, 944s and 968s into one class! When i showed up I had to run against Turbos on racing tires and so on. All I want to do is have some fun with my street car and not embarrass myself.

There should be a number on the springs. Eibach Race Springs (ERS) which are labelled by 3 different values in the following convention: length . diameter . spring rate. However, ERS will come labelled in either Metric (mm.mm.N/m) or English (inchx100.inchx100.lbs/inch) units. 180.64.61 is the same thing as 700.250.350. The conversion from Metric to English is (/.254, /.254, x5.7) "/" means "divide by", "x" means "multiply by".

In this case, I belive that 350=350 pounds. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm pretty sure every region puts all front engine models ,except 924's, in production02. As for the racing tires that shouldn't be allowed in a stock class.

Just remember autocross courses are tight and turbos take time to spool up so since the NA has shorter gearing you almost have an advantage. Last time I did autocross I ended up beating a guy who had a 944 turbo with a k26/8 turbo (which is a big turbo).

You're very experienced so just get some good tires and a decent suspension set up and I'm sure you'll do fine.

My local PCA uses one of the "small" or "mid region" PCA National classing guidelines. As such, ALL 924S, 944, 944S, 944S2, 944T, 944TS, 968 and 928 run in the same class.

Our region calls it P3 I think. It allows for a lot of "street prepared" type allowances.. like R comps/Hoosiers for one, upgrades springs/shocks for another.

With only 150hp, it can be tough, but not impossible to do well, depending on course layout. I tease the S2 guys that I beat because heck, I am spotting them 50hp and their larger brakes, stiffer suspensions etc.

Like someone else said, Check the rulebook to see what mods you can do for the class you want to run in.

That said, is possible that a well prepared PCA car will NOT work for SCCA (where the 944 is an E-Stock car, and mods are limited)
