Question 924 Turbo Tapping Noise

I recently purchased a 1981 924 turbo. It makes a clinking/tapping noise around the turbo area. I do not know what could be making this noise ! The turbo works O.K when driving, however the exhust also makes a rattling noise towards the back of the car.
Can anyone offer any advice ?
Thanks

run some sludge remover through the engine. turbocharged engines have a nasty tendency to create oil sludge. this sludge sticks to the lifters and makes them tap and knock. you may have to run the sludge remover through the engine twice to completely get rid of the knock.

also, use only synthetic oil in your 924 turbo. full synthetic doesn't sludge up easily like dino oil.

worst case, if this doesn't solve it... you'll be preventing yourself from getting a lot of engine damage in the future.

good luck!

pk,

You might want to check the exhaust hangers up under the car. Also check the haedware where the turbo bolts up, this gives trouble sometimes. There should be 4 studs & nuts holding the exhaust flange on the turbo & 2 studs & nuts & 1 12 point bolt with spacer holding maniflold to turbo. If these are bad you'll be hearing exhaust leaks. You might want to check the bracket where turbo bolts to block, & allen nuts where bracket bolts to turbo. If these loosen, it could make the o ring fail you'll loose a lot of oil

There's a couple more things to check with some disassembly, kind of aggraviting. Pull off the exhaust flange & check for end play in turbo. Check for broken spring inside the compressor cover.
